Re: Is the 204 Ruger right for me...?

Is the 17HMR still effective with body shots at 200 on rock chucks? Quick & clean kill, or a lot of crawl offs, etc.?? From my experience since the 17HMR came out, I quit body shots after two seasons for anything over 100 yards. Just too many crawl-offs. However now at any range I only head sho...

Re: Is the 204 Ruger right for me...?

Hi Brent and welcome to the 204um. I feel your pain, having been forced to live in CA for a number of years after the war before I 'broke out' for the promised land. The laws there in regard to firearms are getting just down right stupid. What else could one expect with the likes of Pelosi and Feins...

Re: Took Grandson shooting

Nice! Looks like you've now got a lifetime shootin' pardner! :D What's he shooting there? Looks like it could be a CZ in 22LR or 17HMR with a ten round magazine. I see he's shooting off a RASS; are those now discontinued? Have not seen them advertised for some time now. I wish all the alfalfa farmer...

Re: Took Grandson shooting

Well there, Mr. Brooks, sounds like a very good time with your grandson in the rat patch. It only takes one or two trips with a young-un to set the fever. From there, it's "can we go again Grandpa?" My own grandson is also addicted now, thanks to efforts by both myself and his dad. But nex...

Re: Hornaday brass

The primary gripe about Hornady brass, specifically in 204R caliber was notoriously tight primer pockets that uniforming tools would not even fit into. Some complained about neck brittleness, but I can't comment on that, as I only used 40 cases in 204R long ago. My Sinclair or K&M unformer would...

Re: Scpoe Mounts for Anschutz 1517 Heavy Barrel?

[i][b]are those Talley bases used with the drilled & tapped holes and Talley rings on top? You think I can get by with mediums? Those aren't the Talley one piece lightweight base/rings your using are they? Jim, I used Talley steel bases with their steel ring set on my Annie 1517D HB. My Leupold...

Re: Scpoe Mounts for Anschutz 1517 Heavy Barrel?

Jim, for my Annie 1517D HB, I chose Talley rings for my Leupold VX2 4-12X LR scope. I don't like a 1911 rail on a svelte rifle such as these, feeling it just adds too much clutter on a sleek rifle (purly subjective, I know). http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g66/packrat1/Rifles%20Load%20Dev%202010/D...

Re: Morning Walkabout with my 20VT

jpx: Knoxville TN, eh? I've got a very dear longtime friend in TN, up in Rogersville who's a dedicated shooter. Once a few years back when I was visiting, he and I went out with rifles and had a great time shooting woodchucks all around his "holler". I know there are no rock chucks in TN,...

Re: Wtb todd kinder book

Todd has it in stock at The Woodchuck Den, along with his "Sensational Seventeens". http://www.woodchuckden.com He's the one that started talking me into a 20VT back in 1998, but it took me about five more years to finally take the plunge....slow learner, but I've never looked back. He the...

Well then jpx, until then, here's a closeup pic of a local rock chuck until you can view one through your own scope. ;) http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g66/packrat1/20VT%20Chucks%206-12/DSC_0060-2.jpg This was taken from my truck using a 200mm lens, as there's no self-respecting rock chuck that wo...

I'm also guilty of that, and I wondered the exact same thing. Seems like this issue is human-related, and not mechanical or ballistically induced. In the end, I've muttered to myself....."crap, I did that?"

Re: Morning Walkabout with my 20VT

I'm wanting to do a PD shoot out your way but have to get my "stuff" in order before I can actually plan one out. ;) jpx: No prairie dogs here, you've got to get over the Continental Divide to get into PD country, but most places west of the Rockies have ground squirrels and rock chucks. ...

Re: Big bullet drop

Paul, same load, same exact POA for the 200 yard target?

Sumthin' ain't right for sure, especially at that velocity. No scope adjustment done for the 200 yard target? No wind blowing in from a nearby canyon or other anomaly?

Re: Morning Walkabout with my 20VT

Good read. Did Ruby "fetch 'em for you ?? :) Thanks. No, Ruby is truck-bound when dad is out and about with his rifle. Chucks are pretty savvy, and if they see you, even at 100 yards, most will dive for cover. You may get a head and eyeball peeking over a rock, but best to keep low and slow, a...
