Re: Reverse engineering a factory Hornady 32gr V-Max

Or you could invest the same time and effort into a bespoke load that would shoot better than the factory load. My handloads shoot groups half the size of factory loads, or better. Chronograph the factory loads and you'll have three of the four pieces of the puzzle. You've got a bullet you know you...

Re: WHAT DOES ANNEALING DO?

I have 308's that are on their 10th reload now with necks as good as new. The primer pockets will go before the neck if you anneal regularly and correctly. I just use a propane torch from the local home store, a cordless drill with a socket big enough to accommodate the case with a bit of extra room...

Re: Long range target shooting

...you get all these weird wind "swirls" that are unpredictable as heck.... It's the "unpredictable" bit that makes the .204 a less than ideal choice. The 55-gr Berger has about 1/2 the BC of the heavy 6mm bullets, which means the .204 will be subject to significantly more wind ...

Re: 204 load tests...

What is the charge of R10X you'er using? Rich, following the Sierra load data I used 23.0, 23.5 and 24.0 grains......the latter being .4 grains below max according to their data. according to the Alliant site 27.6 is the max for RL10 and the Sierra 39. Mine found happiness with 24.5. http://www.all...

Re: .204 problems again

that would do it For my bolt rifles I just run a bit of neverdull around the necks to get any carbon blowback off, I try to ensure the cases never touch the ground. On the AR I boil em with a couple of caps of CLR, then hit each case with a blow out nozzle and 100 pound air to get most of the moistu...

Re: Long range target shooting

worst part of our range is in the morning you are shooting dead east into the rising sun, afternoon the wind starts kicking up so you are screwed one way or the other. 300 and beyond range is just a 50 yard wide swath cut through the trees and you get all these weird wind "swirls" that are...

Re: Long range target shooting

see my post and pics of my 600 yard target on the 731 yds & 734yds shooting thread. That was a NRA high power target at 600 yards. Once I started to get the scope dialed in I was getting 2 - 3 inch groups with 4 of my shots while one of the 5 head out to the 8 ring. Definitely minute of prairie ...

Re: 731 yds & 734yds shooting

apologies to griffshek for any hijacking of the thread. 0 altitude which is off by 70 ft. 60 degrees taken with a thermometer. 3650 FPS for 39's taken from my Pro Crono digital which clocked Hornady Factory Vmax at 4150 FPS , 287 BC from Sierras website. 50% humidity which was guessed. Ran the numbe...

Re: 731 yds & 734yds shooting

Yesterday was wanting to do some 600 yard shooting with my 204. Used 2 different ballistics calculators bot gave me a 7-8 MOA come up for a 39 SBK, before I I was done I had a 15 MOA come up. Working the ballistics backwards that comes out to a .200 G1 BC or my chrono is off by 500 FPS Oh and 24.5 R...

Re: Case trimming lengths ?

I trim after every firing to square case mouths and make sure they are all the same. I use a Wilson trimmer and just set it to minimum - 1.830. I don't think the .204 has enough recoil to set back a bullet in a case that has been properly sized.

Re: mods

There is no state law regulating them in S Carolina, you just have to comply with the federal law. I thought about getting one, and they are cool looking on the right gun but they are not really my thing I would rather spend the money on another gun and wear my muffs

Re: New Toy

Which one feels the best to you, that is the important thing. I think of the ones you mentioned the Howa is probably the best deal. Lots of decent guns these days at bargain prices. In the same price range though you have the Tikka and Savages. I am a Savage fan myself simply because they are so eas...

Long range target shooting

I don't expect the 204 to outshoot a 6BR or any of the BR cartridges for that matter but anyone tried the 204 in open F class or 600 - 800 yard matches?

Re: Favorite Loads

+10 on the RL10X....my magic number with the 39 SBK's is 25.2gr. Good luck! I have always found there is 2 and sometimes 3 sweet spots for a powder. Sometimes the increase in velocity is worth it, sometimes not. I am still curious to see how this puppy hunts (paper targets, not pelts) at 600 and 800.
