What is wrong with these primers? Picture

Post by hemiallen »

I have a "new to me" contender carbine barrel in 17 AH, and initially I thought it was a light load causing the depression in the fired primers, but I loaded up 18.6 grains of H322, a Vmax 20 grain bullet and used 6 1/2 Rem primers and got the same condition.

Anyone care to post or PM me their thoughts on the deep depression of these fired brass? Someone said on another forum the necks look sooted, but in person there isn't any soot to speak of that I don't see on my 25-06 and several other big case capacity, full load ammo.

Thanks

Does it do the same with a different barrel/caliber, saying you have the option?

No, I just opened a box from my 7-TCU fired brass ( 20 years ago) and the primer dent looks half the diameter and the rest of the primer has flattened, not concaved like in the pictures, although they could have been used with my other frame. Good point.

So can you change barrels easily with this setup?
- not familiar with the rifle setup.
If so, and if you're not certain about the other brass being fired on the same frame, then perhaps try the other barrel and see if you get the same result.
My first guess would be that the firing pin is protruding too far. But if you've had the gun a while and it's only the new barrel causing problems, I'm not sure about that.
Is it only with the rem6.5s or are other primers seeing the same result?

Well, a couple things come to mind.

What does your firing pin protrusion measure?

Would be interested to see a picture of brass, once fired in your rifle, neck sized only, and fired again.

Interesting . The first firing to fireform is what you see, I assume you are thinking once formed maybe this will go away?

I'll resize one and give it a try.

I have never used Rem primers before, always used WW primers for everything. This is my first attempt at Rem, and soon Fed 205m primers in their appropriate cartridges.

Thanks

I have seen similar, when the cases were being fireformed. The round goes off, but the primer is whacked by the firing pin twice - once by the initial strike and again as the shell is driven backwards as the case is formed.

Another time - wrong profile on the firing pin.

Another time - firing pin was rough - abuse from a previous owner.

Another.....firing pin protrusion is too long.

Can ALSO be...a combination of any of the above....as in two or more!!!

I'm a newbie to reloading, however, for what it's worth i did see a similar picture during my huge amount of research lately and i recall this particular site stating it was caused by incorrect or excessive head space. Just a thought??

I am 99% sure it isn't headspace, I set the brass to crush on closing the action, even though it is fireforming new brass. I changed to rem 7 1/2's and fixed the problem.

6.5 rem primers are made for the .22 hornet and are quite soft. change to 7.5 rem. primers and problem solved.

Allen, as you mentioned, you ARE using this primer in the Hornet case. But, the Rem 7-1/2 primer is too hot a primer for the Hornet case. You'll find in using the 7-1/2, initial primer ignition will indeed start the bullet moving in the case prior to full powder burning. Being it is about the hottest primer we have access to, it is not suitable for the small Hornet case for this reason alone.

You'll most likely find the best compromise using something milder like the WSR. I use the 6-1/2 in my 22 Hornets and K-Hornets, along with my 17AH with perfect results, but many 17AH's seem to like other mild primers such as the WSR. There's been alot of experimentation on this, and hot primers will move a bullet in the Hornet case prematurely and cause irratic accuracy and velocity readings. This is why many use pistol primers in the Hornet case. Keep in mind also that the 17AH and the 22 Hornet operate at different operating pressures, but both are subject to the weak Hornet case design as well as the small internal capacity of the Hornet case makes it very suceptable to primer intensity.

Check out some primer ratings here:

Thanks Rick

Not sure if I'll bring this one to play with next spring, another aquisition before I found the "17 caliber" experience and rejoined the discussions on that other website.

Copied and will be filed in the 17 Hornet/ 22k hornet reloading folder to be looked at before reloading them. That 17 Contender barrel is gone, replaced with Jim S' CZ 17 AH.
