224 Valkyrie's first coyote

Nice crisp, peaceful morning in the sage. Not another soul roaming this area, even the dove hunters seemed to be at least five miles east of me. Three stands and only one coyotes showed to the call. He started circling me to wind/scent and would not stop moving in and out of the sage. So kept tracking him and as he walked through a larger opening, holding on his chest, touched off the trigger. Nosler 50 grain tipped varmegeddon hit last rib/front belly area. He spun around and hit the ground, for the count.. Nasty opening that bullet sure caused. Bill K

That it did, had it hit a little higher, I think it would have almost cut him in half. Those tipped Nosler's are explosive. Bill K

Have you shot the heavier bullets with the Valkyrie? I thought it would shine with the heavier bullets. What group sizes are you getting with the lighter 50 grain bullets? How far was your shot on the yote? There was no tracking involved!!

Have only worked with bullet up into the 70 grain area. Will do some 80-90 later this summer. The 50-55 grain one's are averaging 1 inch or less at hundred.
The coyote was shot at about 120 yrds responded to a call, then started circling like they do and I think he spotted me and was not going to come in any closer, so before he took off I hit him, due to his moving the hit was further back, read of rib cage/front of belly, rather than the broadside chest. But he dropped and thrashed on the spot.

Glad to hear that you can still shoot the lighter bullets in it, wondering about that. I have been thinking about the 6.8 case necked down to 6mm or the 22-250 with a 1:6.5 or 1:7 twist for coyotes. This would shoot the heavier 22 bullets. They would make great long range coyote guns as well as rock chuck red mister.

I have given a thought, in the past to a 22-250 or the 6.8 case necked to 6mm also, even 6.5 and a fast twist. But ended up with the Valkyrie. Still shoot, often, my 22-250 with 50-55 grain bullets on coyotes. It just works and has for me now for over 50 years. I also like my 20-223 ai with the 32 grain varmageddons for them also, it really puts them down with chest/lung shots and no exits. That rifle has a 3 groove 1/11 twist and a Xcaliber barrel. Bill K

There is a .22 GAP, 6.8 necked to .224. Don't know much about it.

The 6.8 necked down to .224 is the Valkyrie. I am not familiar with the .22 GAP. I talked to a customer about his 22-250 with a 1:7 twist, I believe he said he got a 10 inch group at 1,000 yards. The only issues with the 22-250 is the slow twist, especially the older ones with a 1:14 (?)twist. Some of the newer ones have a 1:9 twist. It is always fun to play with a new caliber. I rarely buy an over the counter rifle any more, except for the rimfires!! I just have a tough time giving up seeing the hits and misses in the scope that the 17 and 20 calibers give. The faster twist 204 shooting the 55 grain bullets would not show the hits because of the extra recoil, in my brothers bench gun. I have not been on this site for a long time, good to be back with the shooters!!!

I'm not really sure what the difference is. The .22 GAP is something really new. Eric Mayer at varminter.com has been involved in the development and he's pretty enthused about it.
