Ok guys, just out of interest folks and for general information for everyone.

What velocity are you getting from your load in your .204? No guesses guys, chronoed factual results only please, I'll start.

Powder = 25.4 grains Reloader 10
Bullet = 39 Grain SBK
Barrel length = 24 inch
Primer = Fedral 205

Velocity = 3707 ftps

This load in my custom .204 shoots groups in the .2's or better if I do my bit.

Regularly shoot rabbits out past 400 yards.

PB with this rifle is a rabbit at 482 yards.

Endless/ countless rabbits between 300- 450 yards

Love it.

I have 32 grain V-Max bullets running @ 3,925 fps and 35 grain Bergers going @ 3,850 fps according to a Beta Master Chrony. This is in a Cooper Model 21 using WW brass, RL-10X and either Federal 205M or Remington 7 1/2 primers. I know these loads are temperature sensitive and I handle them accordingly. They shoot so well for me that I am willing to work around this inconvenience.

I've found in my experience that all of these things come into play.

You need to get a magnetospeed chrono, will take care of most of these issues. Chronographing loads has never been more easy since I upgraded.

How does it compensate for elevation?

It would be interesting to see the results on a sunny vs. an overcast day.

I'm all for making it easier but more importantly, more consistent. There is nothing no worse than getting readings several FPS apart from the very same load, out of the very same gun, on the same range and in the very same firing point spot on different days [at pretty much the same time too].

This trend is meant for people to share everyones experiences and load development data for everyone's convenience and no to be to technical.

We can open a more technical reloading trend if you wish, would be good for the more technical and advanced reloading members, and for the ballistic geeks too like myself!

Steve...that load you mentioned will have a different velocity depending on elevation; which is why I mentioned it. A load of 3707 fps @ 4500' above sea level is going to be a tad slower when shot at 450' above sea level. The rabbits at 450 yards are still doable but the velocity will be different.

Hopefully this doesn't upset anyone but i am going to post the results for the 20SCC.

Action: Custom Pierce Engineering RBLP single shot
Barrel: 25" Heavy Varmint PacNor 3 groove 11" twist
Brass: Nosler 221
Primer: Tula SRM
Bullet: 39 sierra
Powder: Accurate 2200
Elevation: 600 foot above sea level
Velocity: 3,780 fps with under 21 grains of powder
Chrony: Magneto Speed
Accuracy level is just over a 1/4" with this combo.

*if i drop down to the 32 grain bullets 4,100 + fps is the norm, utilizing less than 22 grains of powder

This isn't an optical chronograph, it is a electromagnetic chrono, so readings are the same for sunny vs overcast days, you can shoot it in the dark if you want. It also takes reading within the first couple inches of the barrel making elevation a non factor for the flight of the projectile, the pressure wave doesn't affect operation. It does change point of impact on my guns by about 1-2" at 100 yards, but they say it doesn't affect group sizes. This is a whole different technology than your old F1 or prochrono.

It sounds interesting. I tell ya' it, sometimes I pull my hair when the readings are quite different with no change other than light.

Have any information on how the Magnetospeed compares to say the Pact Professional XP Chronograph with infrared screens?

The Magnetospeed compares favorably to Oehler 35s and 43s, if that helps. They've proven to be very precise and very reliable. The snipershide website & forums have quite a bit of info & reviews on them. I believe 6mmbr (is it called accurate shooter now?) also does.

There's also a radar-based chronograph that's just coming to market, albeit a year or two behind schedule. It is too early to say with certainty what its capabilities will be once it's in full production and they have it sorted. Radar based chronos have been in use for some time, but nowhere near the consumer level.
