Best twist rate

Post by publius »

I know this has seemingly been beat to death but.... What barrel twist is the best overall. I want to shoot the light 32s and 40s Asking for too much? Would 1-10 spin the little 32s too much? Would 1-11 be a good compromise? Barrel length? Is 22 enough, any reason to go all the way to 26? Thanks for putting up with a newbie.

1/11 twist does a fine job, with the bullets you are talking about, even handles the 39-40 grain one's fine also.

Agree with Bill, I'd go with the 11-twist.

My custom Match 204 is barreled with a Pac-Nor 11-twist, and it's one of the best shooting .20 cal rifles in my safe. It will even shoot the long for caliber Hornady 40gr V-Max, which is problematic in many factory 12-twist barrels. All the 32's are no problem at all.... .2" accuracy.

It's a personal choice, but all my varmint rifles wear 24" tubes. Best handling length (for me), very good velocity and no muzzle heavy feeling.

Just to add a note too Rick's post.
With the 1/11 twist, and especially other twists in the 20 cal. Often the 40 grain bullets just don't seem to group well, but the 39 grain ones, i.e. Sierra BK's to a really fine job. Just a quirk that it seems the 20 calibers have. Bill K :)
