Longest fox!

Post by foxwhistler »

Had a phone call from a farmer I shoot for the other day saying he'd seen a three legged fox and he wanted it got rid of before lambing! Decided to have a look tonight. Even though it was cloudy, it was very bright! Walked up the drive and saw something too large to be a rabbit in the thermal! Turned out to be a heron at 10-30 at night! Never seen that before! A bit later saw a fox, but it was on the neighbours farm and about 500yds away! Decided it was a waste of time and headed home!got back to the truck and there was a fox a few hundred yards away calling on the other side of the valley and quickly picked him up in the thermal! When I switched to the nv it was definitely a fox limping badly! Tried a call but the fox wasn't interested and disappeared through the hedge! Could still hear it calling so tried a few calls and then saw a fox again at the top of the valley! Had a quick check on measure map and it was about 332yds away! I knew if I started trying to get closer it would see me and be gone! Had a quick look at strelok and decided to give it a go! Was pretty shocked when the fox dropped without a twitch! Only problem is that when I got to it, it was a very healthy dog fox, and I very much doubt it was the lame fox! Have to try again on a better night! Longest fox ever in the night!

Great shot there, FW! He was indeed a healthy looking critter.
Thanks for sharing the story with great graphics to best visualize the event too. :D

If you decide to share the rifle and load details, go ahead.

Thanks Rick! Rifle started off as a Remi lvsf, but now has a timney trigger, bartlein 1-10 fluted barrel, grs stock, lucky 13 mag system and the action has been trued and the bolt also has a bushed firing pin hole due to it cratering primers!
Scope is a meopta optika6 3-18×56 with a night vision add on!
Load is Nosler custom brass, 39 b/ kings, br4 primers and 25.3gr of N-133! Not the fastest, but very accurate!
