What would you do????

So I have a 270 Weatherby, which was my first rifle. I always thought I was a bad shot, but finally figured out that the scope was moving. By that time I had moved on to new rifles. This fall I was planning for a high mountain hunt and thought this rifle with a new scope would be perfect.

But…
I fired the first shot and was on target, then as I loaded the second round, it fired as I closed the bolt. I tested two more times and both times fired as I was closing the bolt.

This rifle does have a competition/target style trigger, where I can slide the side of the trigger forward to set it to 1 or 2 lbs.

I know trouble shooting is hard from this info. I’m not sure if the firing pin is stuck or it’s a problem with the trigger.


My question is… what would you do with this rifle?
I’m not sure if I will ever be comfortable with this rifle.
But I guess I should start with a gun smith and hopefully only have to replace the bolt or trigger.

I was waiting for some other member, with Weatherby knowledge, to weigh in on this subject but it looks like no one is going to answer you. Personally, why own a gun you either don't use or are afraid of because of a safety issue. If you really want to keep and use this rifle, take it to a gunsmith to diagnose the root issue. There's not enough information for helping you given here. If the gun goes off just by closing the bolt, that's pretty dangerous. Weatherby's are generally pretty dependable and expensive enough to justify spending the cash to get it fixed.

A good gunsmith should be able to fix the problem. Explain to him the problem, maybe have him shoot it.

From what you describe, it appears the sear is not holding and needs adjustment. If you're not familiar with these adjustments, a trip to your local smith is in order. It's a simple fix, takes all of ten minutes to restore your rifle to a useful tool again. Once done, your rifle will once again be a familiar old friend, ready for the field.

Sounds like the rifle will be taking a trip to the Gun smith. I’m glad I haven’t had time to remove the scope, I’m glad it SHOULD be an easy fix, crossing fingers.

I will keep you all updated. Really hoping to have for this rifle for some back country shooting.

Not exactly the type of photo you are looking for Skipper, but here is what I have been doing the last day or so, in keeping my drive and street open.
And reloading empty brass for the next shooting run.

Not much sand up this way, on the mountain, just snow, as usual up here, this year, so far a better one than last few. supposed to be another storm headed in around Sun/Mon. with another 1-3 ft. Keeps me busy keeping drive and street area plowed down. Lot's of fun and exercise for this old man.

Personally, I would mail it back to Weatherby and let them look at it. Mailing a rifle is not that hard.

No reason to send it to Weatherby and spend extra money on postage, etc. when it is most likely nothing more than a slight adjustment to the trigger/sear, which a local gunsmith could do, or even yourself, with care.

I've got a book in my library titled "Bolt Action Rifles" by Frank deHaas. It covers virtually every action made since 1895 with complete instructions for trigger, sear and safety adjustments, and every aspect of each action. I refer to mine all the time; see if it is available digitally online, or consider buying a copy off eBay or similar. It'll be the cheapest and best gun-related purchase you'll make all year.

OT: Frank's son Mark was a USMC sniper in the 60's in RVN, and was partially responsible for design requirements for what was then the M40 sniper rifle of Remington fame. Many of his mods are still in use with the variations of the M40A4 today.

Tell your gunsmith it has to be able to pass the bump test. A good trigger adjustment, done right, will not fall off the sear when the recoil pad is bumped on the ground muzzle facing up. Test with rifle unloaded, of course. I would take it hunting if it comes back done right.
