I should stay outa pawn shops!

Post by Rick in Oregon »

Another recent pawn shop treasure surfaced recently. I had to put a decent scope on her, but now she's ready for the rat patch in style.

Anschutz Model 1517 HB in 17HMR, decent wood, primo trigger that breaks crisply right at 1.5 lbs, two mags, Leupold VX2 4-12X 40MM AO with Long Range Duplex reticle mounted in Talley rings and bases.

The little rig should be good for both bench work and a walkabout rifle.

No big deal, just thought I'd share some good fortune and a bit-o rifle porn while we (I) wait for spring rats once again. It's been suggested here that I stay out of the local pawn shops for a while. What fun would that be?

Looks like I need to spend more time in your pawn shops

Can't wait to meet up again, only in my state, not yours...lol

Another nice snag, hope she shoots good enough to keep, or sell her to me,

Keep the economy growing my Friend, 80 working days to go.

She's a dandy for sure Rick!! You are a lucky man!! Around these parts folks only pawn off their beaters & the shops think they are 90%+.

Nice rig Rick! Money has been tight for me, but I just sold my bass boat, and freed up some cash. Now I can start looking again  Just pondering what I might be able to snag in the future.

Thanks you guys....sometimes even a blind hog finds an acorn, right? ;) You just never know what will turn up in the local pawn shops these days, especially considering the state of our economy. I'm certain the fellow who sold it didn't really want to considering the way he cared for it.

After putting a proper scope on her, I took her out yesterday for her first range session. I was not disappointed. I tried my stash of Hornady 17gr Varmint Express, 17gr Remington "Accu-Tip", and the new Winchester 17gr V-Max (as indicated on the box). As with every 17HMR I've ever owned, the Hornady Varmint Express turned in the best performance.

Here's a pic of some of the targets shot....the average of all groups shot with the Hornady load was .550".....definitely Minute of Rat. All shooting was done prone with bipod out the back of my truck....no benchrest, just a quick sight-in for the new rifle/scope combo.

Image

Of all the HMR's I've owned since they first came out, this one fired the smallest 100 yard HMR group to date, even besting my Ruger 77/22 Mag/17HMR switch barrel rig wearing a Lilja SS Match barrel. Purty good for a factory tube:

Image

Some HMR's have gone down the road, but I'm thinking this one will be a permanant resident of my safe now. I'm certain Skippy will be impressed come next spring.

Forget that nonsense. I have a MUCH better idea. I'll send you my shopping list and let you continue the hunt, because your pawn shops are clearly better than mine. :D

That's a sweet HMR, Rick. Have you named her, yet?

Allen...thanks, and yep, unless something drastic changes, she'll have a permanant home here for the foreseeable future. (Counting those days until "freedom" (from work)?

Mike: Okay, send me your shopping list, and I'll continue the pawn shops cruises to see if some other treasure turns up. Not a bad idea actually.

Haven't named her yet, never do until they've been in the field and have drawn rat blood. Those girl names just come to me out of the blue when out in the rat patch, so she'll have to wait until spring to get a proper name like her safe-mates. Maybe I can find some pesky starlings in the meantime while Skippy and his pals sleep the fall and winter away...... :chin:

Yes I am, Thursday was 75 working days, I might retire from the University of Cal and keep working at the takeover managing company for awhile, I always wanted to " double dip" income, taxes will be bad, but it's the thought I took the right decision staying under UC and FREE MONEY that will make those days sweet revenge.

BTW, Terri is thinking of April or May using timeshare points, pm me when you have a date set so I don't miss the fun. She knows which is a priority for me...lol

You know me, Rick. If you like it, odds are nearly certain I will too.

I seem to have an addiction to titanium rifles these days. You know how rifle addictions go. Start out with one and all of a sudden you've got six of them staring you in the face. How many is enough? One more. Always just one more. I've always got room for $700 Coopers, too.

In all seriousness, I do think Oregon is a honey hole for bargains. I recently snagged a Kimber 84 Varmint in .204 from a guy up there. If memory serves, it is a twin to yours.

Rick nice find!! Yep I have two Anschutz. A model 54 my dad bought for me when I shot on the rifle team in high school. I used it for 4 years and my brother used it for 4 too. Dad also bought a 5K case of Ely Ten-X red box. I got about 2500 rounds left. The other is J. G Anschutz model 1430-1434 in 22 hornet with a single stack clip. I don't think there is 50 rounds down the barrel on her. Like you found out..... real sweet triggers.
Enjoy and thanks for sharing.
