Re: 35 Whelen??

Several years ago I read an article by my favorite outdoor writer Finn Aagaard about the 35 Whelen and I have been captivated by it ever since. Although I have never owned one, I sure would like a 35 whelen with a Mauser type action and 22" barrel and a Boyd Classic stock in forest Camo.http://...

Re: large cal. rifles

Guy M summed it up well. If you get a 300 mag but cannot shoot it well you would be better of with a 308 class (270,7 mag, 280, 30.06) rifle with a premium 150 gr. bullet. And get the rifle that "feels/fits" best to you also. Just because a friend says his Remchesterby is awesome it may no...

Re: CZ 527 American, opinions.

The 527 is light, has a comfortable stock, the "set" trigger is great, looks good and shoots most bullets/loads well. some people may not like the look of the magazine (I am one) but the rifle handles and shoots so well I got over it. :D

Re: Varmint 30-06??

A friend uses the Winchester Pointed soft point 125 gr in a 30.06 for coyotes and says it expands very well...but then he shoots desert dogs and does not keep the pelts.

Re: which powder

Lots of fine powders, but for the 40 V-Max I get real fine groups with 26.8 gr of RL 15.

Re: .257 weatherby or .270WSM

Well, either one is a fine long range shooter-the 257 Weath may have a little longer reach and less recoil. If mostly deer though and possibly elk or black bear I'd go with the .270 WSM-and you can still shoot coyotes or fox with it.

Re: what scope?

Fishy, have a good look at the Bushnell Elite line. The 3200's are real good and do not break the bank, the 4200's are even better but more $$$. Bushnell has recently changed scope names; they have the 6500 (too rich for my bank), the Elite (I think it is like what they used to call 4200) and I do n...

Re: 4-12 power for 300-350 yds.

Stickman, I went throught the same questioning as you are now. Are you mostly shooting at p-dogs or coyotes? One of my 204's is heavy stocked, and heavy barrelled and is only for p-dogs. the other is light and is can easily be carried for coyotes/fox etc. or used for p-dogs it only has a 4-12 x 40. ...

I have the "universal" on 3 scopes; I love the way they fit (and don't scratch the scope either).

Re: 4o gr V-max range day

For coyotes, Hornadys 45 gr. Spire Point (based on there Interlok bullet) will penetrate better and NOT blow up on the close shots.

Re: Hornady Brass Quality

When I first got the 204 I had some Hornady factory ammo, and all of them had very tight primer pockets, not so with Remington.

Re: CZ Varmint loading data please

I've been using a 40 V-Max with 26.8 gr. of RL 15 and Rem case, CCI 450 Mag small rifle primer (lots of guys use the BR4, but I did not fee lthey were worth the price). FPS is 3650 and I get 1/2" groups.

Re: Howa 204 OAL ?

Never measured mine. I just load 32 and 40 V-Max to 2.25" to 2.26" and they both shot 1/2" groups every day with RL 15 powder.
