Re: Match Grade Bullets for .204

Weird Willy, that's my other name, found that the .204 26 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade has delivered the smallest consistent groups with all twists and powders. It shoots .240" 10 shot groups (or smaller on days when my brain is working optimally) in a 1:12" twist, down to .206" 10 sh...

Re: Savage customer service

When I ordered a stock and a few parts on Monday they were on my porch the following Friday. Same with a batch of rimfire magazines. Very good service.

Re: Vapor trial

Well, my theory is that the thin jacket soft lead core bullets do not support the core sufficiently, and are damaged from rifling engraving - which becomes stress risers depending on rifling depth and form. Couple that with the high temperatures mentioned by Fred C Dobbs, the core becomes plastic an...

Re: seating depth question

You will only have to go beyond 2.260" if you use Berger 50 and 55 grain HPBT bullets. Then the problem will be to stabilize them in a 1-12" twist, which won't happen, so accuracy will be dismal (a 1:8" twist is best for these heavy bullets). As far as I can deduce (guess) is that the...

Re: Best primer pocket uniformer and flash hole deburr tool

I've been using the Sinclair tools for years, before any others were available. They work just fine. These tools, regardless of brand, are about as simple as possible, they all work the same. I use the Sinclair uniformers with the power tool adapter, as using a power drill leaves a better finish ins...

Re: Vapor trial

The vapor trail I refer to is from the bullet coming apart from excessive velocity. It happened when I used Sierra Blitz bullets (or other bullets designed for low velocity cartridges such as Hornet bullets) in the .22-250 or .220 Swift loaded to velocities in excess of 3,800 fps. When fired there w...

Re: Barrel Mounted Chronograph

Neat little gadget. My two Oehler chronographs are such a chore to set up, I'll have to try one when they have caught up with demand. Here's a prediction I made a few years ago about the pending electronic revolution in shooting. The digital rifle scope will become an automated information center. N...

Re: Primers

In the old days I found that Remington primers were the most accurate across the board. In those days the primers were manufactured under the Remington DuPont label by Remington Arms Co. Inc.. All Remington primers were manufactured with two leg anvils. I found two samples of the old two legged prim...

Re: How far off the lands do you seat your bullets??

With which bullet? I use the 26 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade in a 1:12" twist and Nosler's 32 grain BT lead Free in a 1:8.5" twist, also the 50 grain Berger HPBT. The 26 grain Barnes and 32 grain Nosler both seated to 2.260" or the Berger seated to 2.300" shoot .250" - .300&...

Re: Old Powder

A friend thought he was doing me a favor by giving me his ancient can of Dupont 4350 for my 6.5x55. It actually had rusty-colored dust that pufffed out of it when I unscrewed the top, and the particles actually have a slight rust-color tint. I dumped the can over a screen and shook it and blew over...

Re: Help finding winchester 204 brass

Hope you found some. Powder Valley has Hornady and Nosler brass in stock www.powdervalleyinc.com more expensive of course.
I had the same problem with .22-250, but Natchez had a stock so picked up a supply.

Re: 50gr Bergers

Assuming the question involves the .204 Ruger. My experience is that they are real shooters, but they require a fast twist barrel. I used them in a 1:8.5" twist 24" Pac-Nor barrel. Using Varget powder they shot around .5" ten shot group at 100 yards, but may do better. I didn't have t...

Re: My first .204 ruger

Barrel break-in is controversial to say the least. I read a gun writer in one of the national mags that said he couldn't see any changes in the bore with a bore scope during break-in. Which may be true, but I'm not sure any microscopic surface changes would be visible, nor would any internal grain s...

Re: Warm Loads - Barrel Life

Barrels are like brake pads, made to be used and replaced. If you want to know how hot your barrel is getting try one of these: http://www.amazon.com/MicroTemp-MT-100-Digital-Infrared-Thermometer/dp/B000EIVWSW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331044591&sr=8-1 Doesn't cost much and you really know hot...
