Re: PROBLEMS WITH EXCEEDING COL of 2.260

And to all the above, may I add that the .204 Ruger is a mystical cartridge - nothing truly applies to it that is accepted as normal for other cartridges. My best accuracy happens with the bullet seated to 2.260", even the little stubby appearing 26g grain Varmint Grenade. The exception is the ...

Re: Ladder test results. ( Help guys please)????

In my long and varied experience I never used the ladder test mumbo jumbo - I believe it isn't statistically accurate enough for my purposes. With Reloader-10x the majority of loads will print between .5" and 1.0" at 100 yards. This makes the ladder difficult to use even at 200 yards, prob...

Re: Oh Come On!

Hey, I bought one just for a lark ( a source of or quest for amusement or adventure, not the bird). Bought an illuminated 3-10x Weaver Extreme something or other a couple of years ago for $189 and a Bushnell Elite 4200 for some ridiculous price I can't recall. Natchez must buy salvage lots from bank...

Re: Projectile weight consistency

Guys, there is only one way to obtain perfectly uniform weight and shaped jacketed bullets, you gotta make your own. I made my own 7mm open tip bullets for years for metallic silhouette shooting, each bullet came from the same dies using precision jackets. The weight for some was set at 130 grains +...

Re: Its here Custom .204!

If you want to shoot a heavy .204 bullet, say the 50 and 55 grain Bergers, you'll need a 1:8" twist. Anything from the 26 grain Varmint Grenade to the 50 grain Berger will do nicely in a !:9" or better a 1:8.5" twist. In that case might as well go 1:8". The heavy weights won't de...

Re: .204 Ruger accuracy

Being just a paper puncher and the occasional batch of eggs trajectory has never been much of a concern for me. The VG has a very low BC due to its light weight. Someone once remarked something to the effect of "its like trying to shoot a styrofoam cup out of a gun" LOL's Anyhow it loses ...

Re: New rifle

Talked to my buddy in Oregon today. He is having two Remington XR's rebuilt by Greg Tannel the Colorado gunsmith that we both use ( http://www.gretanrifles.com ) Tannel recommends shooting three shot groups. He says that three shots show the rifle's capability, while more show the shooter's ability....

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

Thanks for the help. I'll try backing off & working up. It'd blow my mind if the screw tightness would do that. Ryutzy, there's only two screws holding the action in, and it's to an aluminum block. Also, I started at 25lbs, then alternated the screws as I worked up to 65lbs. It absolutely will ...

Re: Still my all around favorite scope

I purchased a Weaver Classic Extreme 30mm tube in 2.5-10x 50 with the illuminated reticle and side focus when they were on closeout for under $200. Nice scope, it survived a couple hundred rounds of 6.5-284 without a hitch. That little red dot really stands out against a black target. I should have ...

Re: Nikon hath sinned against me

Yes, I agree the cameras are superb, but my Nikon scopes are just substandard, with the older one from the 1990's being better than the current crop.

Re: what scope?

I have two Nikon Monarchs 6-20x and 6-24x and neither of them equals the Bushnell Elite 4200's, the Leupolds, or Burris offerings in clarity, contrast or sharpness. The Elite 3200 and 4200 has been discontinued and branded as the Elite with new lens coatings. Even my Clearidge Ultra XP 6-20x is far ...

Re: Problem with reloads

Try a different bullet, key holing is a sign that your barrel isn't stabilizing that particular bullet. I would suggest a 26 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade with the same load and a COL of 2.260". If it wont shoot that combination then something else is wrong. Many .204 Ruger barrels have trouble ...

10X is quite a hex for buck toothed little critters.
Bullets fly and rodents die, and soon turn to pasture fritters.

I like it too!

Re: Tackling Scope Cant

I hate scope cant! So I mount the rifle in my barrel vise, use a mechanic's level on the mount base and set it level, then lock down the vise. Wooden blocks can be used in a bench vice or C-clamped to a bench. With two-piece bases I check that the front and rear bases are both reading to the same le...
