Re: WC-842 Powder ?
Given how old SMP-842 is, and how it came to be; makes me wonder if what is currently being sold as "Surplus" was done so for a good reason/formula change. good point. I had not thought about this. I figured it was just an overrun or something. I have found that the Dogtown and Varmint Ex...

Re: WC-842 Powder ?
Since my earlier posts, I have tested the SMP-842 powder on the Barnes 26 gr Varmint Grenade 20426, Berger 35 gr Varmint 20303, 32 gr Hornady 22004, 40 gr Hornady 22006, as well as the 34 gr Dogtowns. Initially I was under the impression that SMP-842 was an analog to CFE-223. This is not correct. Wh...

Re: WC-842 Powder ?
I know this is a really late response, but my powder vendor is David Mosley and can be reached at dlm37015@bellsouth.net or (615) 497-4205. He is located near Nashville, TN. He has a huge stock of reloading supplies at very good prices.Darkker wrote:Hey Bert,

Re: CFE223 range report (finally)
Although I am yet to be 100% confirmed, I believe strongly that CFE223 is in fact SMP-842. Which is the military powder for the "new" M855 ammo. Used specifically due to the all copper bullets. Which is why I asked for a photo of CFE223. I have been explicitly told the same (842 = CFE223)...

Re: CFE223 range report (finally)
Question..
can someone post up a decent close-up of a sample of CFE-223 powder (on a white envelope for contrast)?
Thanks,
Bert

Re: WC-842 Powder ?
SMP = St. Marks Powder. WC = Western Cannon. Generally a distinction for "Canister Grade" powder, Vs. Surplus. A little bit of semantics, I know. I know it has the de-coppering agent, I'm just not exactly clear that there is a "real" difference other than that; Difficult to get ...

Re: WC-842 Powder ?
According to my supplier (who has recently bought several tons of the stuff), WC-842 & SMP 842 are both the same powder, and indeed made by St. Marks. They are not WC-844 (H335), My understanding, is CFE-223 data is applied to WC842. And again, according to my supplier, WC-842 (at least current ...

Re: 34 gr Midsouth Load info
Still developing the load, so ballpark - Dogtown 34 (same bullet, but Midway USA), 27.0g of H4895, CCI 400, 2.250" COL. It is running ~.6" 5-shot groups in my Howa 1500 (which is real finicky).

Re: Redding Dies and SAAMI Tolerance ?
All, I did speak with Redding tech support, who were very helpful. Just below the shoulder, the body die is cut to .3570, and assumes .001 -.002 spring-back (cartridge should be resized to nominally .3590, which is what I get). I will add that they commented on the fact that some re-sized cartridges...

Re: Redding Dies and SAAMI Tolerance ?
If ya' can't squeeze the brass down far enough Redding does make off-set shell holder that may workout for you. HTH Jim, are you talking about the Competition Shell Holder set ? I have a set of those, that bump the shoulder up to another .010"; it does give me about an additional .0005" i...

Re: Redding Dies and SAAMI Tolerance ?
Thanks Hedge, BTW, I did select a sample of once fired (form-fired in my Howa) cases today, annealed several (made a cool fixed geometry jig for my pinpoint torch on my multi-axis drill press). I then re-sized the whole group (annealed and un-annealed). There were no differences in the final measure...

Re: Redding Dies and SAAMI Tolerance ?
Thanks, Hedge, That is a helpful comparison. Below the shoulder, your die seems to be running .010" smaller (and what I had expected in mine). Looks like down near the web, it is pretty much the same. Out of curiosity, what are you getting right on the shoulder (the reference & headspace di...

Re: Redding Dies and SAAMI Tolerance ?
I am having problems with once-fired brass (purchased virgin from Midway, then fired in my gun ), and some twice fired. All (~ 300 total )are resizing to the same size as reported above. But I guess in regards to your point, I am asking "what is the desired point?" that folks are getting o...
