Re: Is the Cost of Reloading really worth it?

To me, the process of reloading is very pleasurable in and of itself. I, too, love producing ammo that shoots the bullets I prefer more accurately than ammo I can purchase off the shelf. I like the tinkering, the measuring, the snooping through my reloading manuals and records, and the anticipation ...

Re: Leveling Scope to Rifle

Don't know how I missed this thread when it was fresh. I level my scope empirically using trial-and-error by shooting near and far. First, I put a piece of tape on my front scope ring which extends to the ring/scope interface. Then I put a second piece of tape on my scope right at the ring. I then d...

If you shoot ground squirrels in the Klamath Falls area, you enjoy the benefit of feeding all sorts of raptors: I've seen both golden and bald eagles perched on the same pivot pipe, along with hawks.

How cool is that?

Re: 204 will it lift a PD out of it hole like a 22-250?

"Scorched earth"? You obviously have never visited a rich alfalfa field inhabited by over a hundred thousand ground squirrels. You could spend days shooting them and return a week later and it would appear you were never there. . . . Yeah. I've seen fields where, if you soft-focus your ey...

Re: Sierra 39 Blitz King

This is a conundrum. 3700 ain't that fast for a 39SBK in a .204 and it shouldn't disintegrate (which suggests too fast a twist). On the other hand, you say it key-holes (suggesting it's under stabilized due to too slow a twist). (My pet load is the 39SBK @ 3800fps in a 1:12 barrel.) But you say the ...

Re: Corvid Control

Okay, so I'm a couple of months late. But congratulations! 500 Yards?? That's inspiring, to say the least. I need to improve! My best on ground squirrels is ~ 300.

Oh! My Savage loves that 39 BK too!

Re: Fun times in Rat Patch, SD this week

Congratulations. I sure do understand what you mean about good practice for long distance shooting! Small targets, long range and breeze make for lots of (in my case) trial-and-error! We're going to Klamath Falls tomorrow for a couple of days shooting ground squirrels. It will be our second trip thi...

Re: Scope for .204!

My general recommendation is to get the best glass you can: For me, my glass is forever. If I sell one of the rifles I've fitted with high-end scopes, I'll keep the glass. My passion is shooting ground squirrels and I have 3 Nightforce NXS (5.5-22) scopes and one SHV (5-20) scope on my squirrel rifl...

Re: It's almost time.......

jpx2rk I've never shot PDs but wish I could. On GS shoots, I've shot jackrabbits and (one) rock chuck while after GSs. Both rabbits and the Rock Chuck were HUGE in my scope after shooting GSs. I completely missed a coyote, though I came close (at 600+ yards). I believe ground squirrels are smaller t...

Re: It's almost time.......

Rick, those who haven't shot those nasty, destructive rats don't know how satisfying it can be! To quote a cliche: "It's the most fun you can have with your cloths on!" My wife of ~54 years is VERY indulgent. And so, too, is Mark's. His armory is up to par and he, like you and I, live for ...

Re: It's almost time.......

Hi Rick! My buddy Mark and I have been getting ready since June. I've got hundreds of .243s, hundreds of .223s for each of two rifles and hundreds of .225 Winchester rounds I'm now going full speed ahead with my .204. I've settled on the 39 gr SBK with 27.5 grains of Varget. It's a 0.5MOA (or smalle...

Re: Getting ready for my first 204 in CZ Varmint...buying the other "stuff"

I myself always use a steel cleaning rod on the theory that the soft coatings or aluminum rods can catch grit and score the bore. Don't know if there's a solid basis for my concern, but that's what I've been doing for many years. I, too, recommend the 39 grain SBKs and 35 grain Bergers. I've not bee...

Re: .204 40gr. Nosler BT vs Hornady 40gr vmax

Have shot very few Nosler and Vmax, started with the 39 gr Sierra and have had no reason to change! Mostly groundhogs and prairie dogs! They do not exit the groundhogs!! You know the results on prairie dogs!! :>) I've found that the 39 Sierra (28 grains Varget) is fiendishly accurate in my Savage F...
