Re: Upland Bird Hunting

However... An opportunity to "rescue" a young German Wirehaired Pointer named Maverick came along. :) Whoo Boy! He's a wild one. I've had my hands full with this good boy. Same breed as Clark, but with a completely different coat. He's also more muscular. And did I mention that he's a wild...

Re: Upland Bird Hunting

Sadly, ol' Clark passed of cancer a few months after those photos. He'd been slowing down, but the vet couldn't find anything wrong with him until it was too late. I miss that dog.

Re: Downsides to the 204 for coyotes

My coyote hunting opportunities have grown, so I removed the fixed 12x from my CZ varminter in 204, and replaced it with an under-employed 4.5-14x Leupold.

Have some 35 gr Bergers loaded up and ready to go. Just need to get out there and start looking for coyotes!

Re: 600 yard 6 Creedmoor Results

Guy, I'm curious why the 6mm over the 6.5 Creedmoor. I ask because I find myself asking that question. Also included is the 6x47, 6.5 x47 or the 260 Remington or AI. Hi Jim, sorry I neglected this post for so long and hope you got your new rifle! Why the 6mm? :) It was on sale at Sportsman's Wareho...

2020 mule deer & pronghorn

Used a twenty year old, but new to me, Ruger Number One rifle this year, a 7mm Rem Mag topped with a 3.5-10x Leupold. Handloaded some 160 grain SPBT Sierra GameKing bullets over enough RL-22 to achieve 3050 fps with excellent accuracy. My final 3-shot sight-in/practice group at 300 yards measured on...

Re: Help with bullet choice

Wow - am way late to this post! :) Best of luck on the antelope hunt. I personally think that the little 6mm 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip is a wonderful hunting bullet. It's brought down several mule deer and whitetail from my son's 6mm Remington, loaded to about 3,000 fps. Farthest kill he made wa...

Re: 600 yard 6 Creedmoor Results

I was pretty doggone impressed with the Hornady factory ammo. Bought only one box of it, 108 gr ELD match. Functioned perfectly through the Ruger rifle, no surprise, and excellent accuracy! Sighting in the rifle took but a few minutes and a few shots. I've fired 17 factory cartridges, kept three to ...

Re: 600 yard 6 Creedmoor Results

Skipper (I used to get called that when I was a Captain in the Marines) I've never had a scope that had 1/8 MOA clicks. But I've achieved High Master in NRA Long Range prone competition. ;) One click equaling 1/4 MOA is just peachy with me. I'm human. I vibrate more than that. It IS "that ugly&...

Re: 600 yard 6 Creedmoor Results

Thanks. My rifles sometimes pick up names. This one is "BUG" for Big Ugly Gun. It officially displaced my AR-15 as the ugliest gun I own, but it is a shooter! :) Twist rate on Ruger's factory barrel is 1:7.7 Why 7.7? Danged if I know! :) Haven't measured the freebore. I just handloaded to ...

600 yard 6 Creedmoor Results

Finally got some rounds downrange at 600 yards with the 6 Creedmoor Ruger Precision Rifle! I am very pleased. Shot from the bench, with the rifle on a Harris bipod, no rear bag. Ammo was my handloaded 108 gr Hornady ELD Match bullets with H4350. I had removed the muzzle brake and did notice a little...

Re: Upland Bird Hunting

My son John, our ten year old German Wirehaired Pointer Clark, and I enjoyed a nice, relaxed hunt at the Cooke Canyon Hunt Club, near Ellensburg Washington this morning. Clark enjoyed the easy hunt as much as we did. He found the six birds, dutifully pointed each one, then retrieved each one. I boug...

Upland Bird Hunting

Have been doing more upland bird hunting in the past few years. Mostly because I've finally got a really good bird dog, "Clark" a ten year old German Wirehaired Pointer. He's made me a better hunter! We usually go for chukar on public ground, but make a few trips every winter to a hunt clu...

2017 Washington mule deer

Realized that I'd neglected to post this. In 2017 I stayed home for the fall season, and hunted a chunk of public land in Douglas County Washington, only a few miles from my driveway. On public land, in Washington, I've learned to "go ugly early" :D Or in other words, take the first legal ...
