Still slow here
But the hot weather has let up. Had a few days in the 70's, it's staying in the 80's now. We could have a few warmer days but our main summer is pretty much over. Kind of felt like fall in the air a couple of the cooler days. I did get two badgers a couple weeks ago with my .204. Haven't seen any in...

Hot
It's been really hot here, way to hot for our ground squirrels, we won't see them again until next spring. It's way to hot to get out and look for anything to shoot. Today is the eigth day in a row of over 100 degree temps. They're predicting a couple more days of it and that will set a new record f...

Re: back to Surprise Valley
Sounds about like the same weather forecast for here. I think the varmint hunting is about done for the season. I sure hope it will be better next year. Hopefully we can get some coyote hunting in this fall/winter.

Re: back to Surprise Valley
It's really been hot here and hotter days coming, Triple digits all next week, about 20 degrees above normal for this time of year. All the squirrels in this area are down for good now. Probably the chuck's too. The Boise River is getting lower every day, by the end of summer it will probably be Boi...

Re: back to Surprise Valley
P1070343.JPG Here's a picture of one of the meadow's up there. Most of these meadows were pretty wet, kind of marshy. The squirrels are in places where there were scattered trees. I should have taken more pictures. Didn't get any of the "victims". There have also been several big foot sig...

Re: back to Surprise Valley
Nice badger. Actually it was my buddy's 1911. The chuck popped up at about 20 yds. I told him that was kind of close for a rifle so he handed me his 1911, first shot went over him so I held 6 0'clock and smoked him. He was at the top of a long rock slide and slid quite a ways down but he was DRT. I'...

Re: back to Surprise Valley
Ha ha, I named him Napolean Blown apart! Sorry it took me so long to reply. My left knee has been giving me fits. I think it's arthritis. Had a couple days I couldn't walk. Can't get in to the doctor until July 1st. Thank God for Ibuprofen. It's feeling pretty good lately and I did manage to make a ...

Re: Still in Surprise Valley
I had to make trip out of state for a double family funeral so didn't get much shooting for a couple weeks. I'm home now though and the squirrels are out in full force. Lot's of young pup's out. My shooting partner and went out for about 3 hours yesterday afternoon. We shot until we both ran out of ...

Re: back to Surprise Valley
They don't have a white tail. They are in the desert but don't seem to be in the sage brush areas, at least not where we shoot them. There are three species of Piute ground squirrels. Two of them are protected and can't be shot. F & G says they are very hard to tell apart and even the biologists...

Re: back to Surprise Valley
Here in So.West Idaho we've been going out once a week for about a month. They're still not out in full force yet. Here it seems they really don't get out good until after the pups are hatched and out of the burrows. Shouldn't be to long. The sub species we have here are the Piute ground squirrels. ...

Re: Cant wait
We didn't have much winter until a week ago then we got 12" of snow in three days. It's melting now but it's a muddy mess in the squirrel feilds. Makes it hard to get out on the two tracks where we shoot them. I'll get some pictures next time we go out.
