Re: h4895 high pressure issues...?

Your bottles of powder say "Drop loads by 10% when switching lots". What that tells you is that have nominal burning rate swings of up to 10%. Does the load info you looked at give the lot number of the powder tested? No, it doesn't, so never assume you have the same thing. Also watching p...

Re: Savage questions

A bit late to the party I see, but here are a few tips for you. I love CFE in my Predator. My accuracy load has atrocious ES numbers, something like 110fps. But is a bugholer out to 200 yards. The same results showed true with MZ5's rifle, so don't just discard one with "bad" numbers. Also...

Re: WSM .223

That would be a WSSM.
They are HARD on throats!! And it is very easy to get them very hot very quickly.

Re: 204 Midsouth 34grn

My experience with CFE may blow your skirt up. The load I found works fantastically in two different rifles, as in choose which eyelash you want to hit. Oddly enough, when I chrono'd the loads, they are: 1) rather slow. 2) have an ES of about 100 fps That "Should" mean it is not an accurat...

Re: COAL vs Pressures

The longer the oal, the less jump to the lands and the less bleed-off. The less "run" the bullet gets at engraving into the lands. As a system it becomes about momentum. If you think about driving your car. If you are driving the parking lot at 5mph, you won't need "extra" thrott...

Re: COAL vs Pressures

Suppose it depends on what you want to call "significant". Yes, the longer the COL, the higher the pressures. The deeper seated the lower, to a point; then pressures REALLY begin to spike.

Re: FLIERS ????

Powders, plural.
Any ball powder with Winchester, Hodgdon, some Accurate on the label. It is all made in Florida by defense contractor General Dynamics.
I like CFE223, or 748 under Varmint Nightmares personally.

Anyone got any good loads for this rifle using these powders?

Sorry but no one but you will have a good load for that rifle, unless you send to one of us.

IME the 204 is not a fickle animal to load for, just start your homework.

Re: FLIERS ????

FF, from my experience and few fellows on another board; no solvent will get rid of it once it's taken ahold, that's why the JB. So what I did was a normal cleaning with patches and solvent. Then got out my nylon brush (the only kind I have) and absolutely coated every possible part of it with JB Bo...

Re: FLIERS ????

Here are some thoughts for you, do with them what you wish. My very first 204 was a Savage from the EARLY dawn of the 204. That shot for a time and was spectacular, then the aliens came. I would shoot some amount and all touch, then magically the next round would either flat vanish, or be well off t...

Re: Leupold vs Nightforce

I like Surefire's take on this, I differ somewhat, but he makes a good arguement. The trick is to look VERY carefully at the specs. Bigger tubes don't make a better scope. The maddening thing to me is lack of adjustment in a scope. Personally, I'm not a nightforce fan. They make a good product but n...

Re: Nosler Varmageddon Powder

I was reminded that I was painting with a broad brush. Nosler's ammo business is still small enough that they in fact do only load canister, with Dillon machines no less.

I do stand corrected about that one, will edit my original post.

Thanks.

Re: Nosler Varmageddon Powder

No large factory ammo uses canister grade powder, nor loads by weight in grains, they load by volume.
Non-canister grade powder gets sold to factories based on burn rate. So one lot to the next will be somewhat different.

Re: Berger load manual question

VERY few people actually do their own pressure testing, or have done it in some time. The resellers, like Hodgdon, happily provide info that most will re-print. Unless you are THE guy who got a production rifle with a: SAAMI min spec chamber, groove, bore rifle; you will NOT have higher velocities t...

Re: Powder charge

Dirty, Spend some time in the Lee manual on Volume vs. Weight. Regardless of which method you prefer, volume isn't trying to get a grain charge; It's trying to get a volume, only has a reference to weight. Cookie recipes don't call for oz of four, they call for cups of flour; regardless what it weig...
