Skippy Earns His Wings

A short video clip a friend and I put together from a rat outing recently I thought you all would enjoy. It proves beyond doubt that ground squirrels, despite their name, CAN indeed fly!

The "ring" heard at the shot, is from concussion of the discharge near an aluminum irrigation pipe wheel line that was about 5 yards in front of the muzzle.

Of course, it helps flight characteristics when the flight is induced via a 204, 20VT, or even as in this case, a little 221Fireball.........

BIG air and good hang time on that little bugger! Your little Fireball gets it done. Would you care to share some details on the video camera, lens, etc.?

Thanks for sharing.

Sure....the camera was a Nikon D7100 DSLR using a Nikor 70-300mm lens on Program mode.

I had the little Fireball along for work inside 300 yards, and for that task, it performed remarkably well. (That's according to me......I'm sure the rats felt quite differently ;) )

For those who note such things, the load was the 40gr Nosler Varmageddon Tipped, over 20.0gr of A2200, Rem 7-1/2 in Lapua cases for just over 3,100 fps.....still plenty quick enough for anything inside 300 yards, as the rat above will attest.

  The only launch I've ever had here is with my Marlin 17HMR on a chipmunk perched on an old fence rail. The 17gr V-Max flipped it out of the scope & I only found the upper 1/2.

Unless I count the crow at 145yds off a round bale. Made 2 pieces out of 1 crow with that shot & I woulda thought I could get better airtime with a winger creature. Go figure.

Tough to take off and have air time, Glen  With the overload of lead, the crow had. :D Bill K :)

Well that's a good way to spend the day. The evil laugh I think is in everyone when they are launching vermin.

Dang Rick! I'm going crazy just wondering if I get to come shooting this year and all you can do is tease me with stories, pictures and videos!!!!
I've got to get retired!!!!!! Gary

Come on now, Gary.....you don't have to be retired to take a few days off and go shoot rats. Just put down your tools, pack your gear and GO! Last time I checked, you were over 21 and don't need 'permission' from anyone to go have fun. :?

It's a bumper crop of rats this year.....if you don't go, you'll regret it for the rest of the year, and have to wait a full YEAR to go again!

Besides, wouldn't you rather be seeing this rather that the butt-end of a hammer? :chin:

Yeah, I thought so. :D

(There's still time.....you can do it!)
