Howa's Any Good?

Post by VarMitt »

I saw a used Howa 22-250 in a local gun shop. It felt good and looked good. It has a SS fluted heavy barrel / thumbhole laminated stock with a VX3 6.5-20x40/varmint recticle on top. The guy is asking $1500. Can anyone tell me about the Howa and is this a fair price.

Seems like it might be a tad high (especially for used).

Check out the Howa's on Gunbroker.com. Then check out the prices of Leupolds Scopes.

That should be about the price for new. I was looking at that rifle at our Sportsman's warehouse and they wanted $619 but the barrel was scratched so they would drop 10% off if I wanted it. I don't think they are hot sellers as they told me they had the rifle over a year. The scope retails for around $880 but you can get them for less than that if you shop around. I'd counter offer at about $1200 or so and see if he takes it (if you really want it). Gary

Howa heck am I s'pose to know if they're any good?

I know they use the same action as the weatherby vanguard and everyone I know likes them.

My boy's howa heavy barrel cost 425.00, 180.00 for the thumbhole stock, and then the price of the bushnell elite was 420.00, so you can figure what that should cost, everything was brand new when purchased!

Howa's are very very accurate, shouldn't lose in that area!

Have a Howa in .243 and a Vanguard in 7mmMag. Both are exceptionally accurate.

I had a Howa 1500 stainless thumbhole with VXII 4-12x40ao. Sold it for $800 with trigger, bedding job and bore guide.

Plan on a trigger for any Howa as they are terrible and not adjustable near as I can tell.
Sako VLSS Set Trigger in .204 with Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x50 LR

They are adjustable, I adjusted my boy's howa down to 3lbs w/ no creep! I actually got it down to 2lbs, but I didn't think he needed that light a trigger!
