howa 1500 .204

my boy has a new howa 1500 in .204, trigger pull is a crisp 4.5 lbs, can anybody tell me how to adjust the trigger pull, which way do you turn the trigger adjustment screw? I'm taking it down to about 3lbs.

I got this info off of another site about adjusting the Howa trigger:

The Howa 1500 has two trigger adjustment screws identified as the front trigger adjusting screw and the rear trigger adjusting screw. They can be identified by screws with locking nuts.

The front screw is for trigger pull, loosen the locking nut up and loosen the screw counterclockwise until you get the trigger pull you want and then tighten the locking nut back up. Probably won’t get it below about 3 lbs.

The rear screw is for creep, loosen the back locking nut up and turn the screw clockwise a little bit and tighten the locking nut back up. If you go to far the safety won't work, not a problem just back it off a little until the safety does work. You are not going to get all the creep out of it, so you have to play with these a little bit, don't get in a hurry.

This screws should adjusted maybe an 1/8 turn at a time!

i have a howa 1500 in 204. if you bought the gun new, there are instructions in the box on how to adjust the trigger pull. i do believe phasers answer is right though. and you probably will not get below 3 lbs pull. i had install a timney trigger to get my pull down where i want it. if you are using the gun for hunting, i would suggest not going below the 3 lbs. pull. but, if it will be a bench gun, i would just go ahead and order a timney or another trigger that can be adjusted lower and take more of the creep out.

Thanks guys, thats the most info I've gotten from anybody! and no there where no instruction on the trigger pull in the box, on the manual, nothing, I suspect a liability attorney is invovled in that

You can adjust the Howa factory trigger down to 2 lbs. However, you will have some creep. Get a Timney trigger, remove and replace one screw, it is that simple. Have it adjusted By Timney to 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 pounds before shipping to you. It will make a fantastic shooter out of your Howa. Best and most accurate rifle for the money on the market. I have set up six of the Howa 1500 Varmint rifles with Zeiss 6.5 X 20 /50MM scopes and each rifle will shoot sub-caliber shot groups (3 shots) at 100 yards. One of my friends just recored a 570 yd PD kill, first shot. Needless to say he was estatic. I lazered the distance. I have recorded shots over 600 yards and now have calibrated shooting charts to 700 yards - that is the next challenge. I shoot the factory 40 GR Hornady V-Max. Hand loaded 39 Gr BlitzKings also do an superb job. Be safe, good luck and enjoy the new rifle.

I have a timney on my mini mauser but haven't got the rifle to fit into the stock yet, I'll cross each bridge in it's turn, My boy is 16yo, he's an excellent shot, been shooting since he was 5yo, and hunting since he was 7yo, however he is still a kid and I think 3lbs is as low as we should go for now, he was making 400yd shots on prairie dogs last may with the NEF Handi-rifles we used, so this howa with a 3lb trigger should be a vast improvement!

adjusted the boys howa down to 3lbs last night, was relatively easy thanks to the help from this forum, actually got it down to 2 1/4 lbs but I think thats too light for him, it's currently set at a crisp 3lbs with no creep!

Your are very lucky if you were able to adjust out the creep without locking up the safety. I have the same rifle in .22-250 and .270 WSM and gave up trying to get rid of creep in both. Trigger pull is excellent and easy to adjust, but the creep is maddening. Finally installed a Timney in the .22-250 and it is great and almost has good as my stock Tikka .243 trigger.
