204 vs 270 vs 308 vs half inch steel plate at 350 yds

Post by chipper »

Had to prove to a couple neighbors how superior that tiny little 204 Ruger was compared to the other guns. The purpose was to show how much damage that TINY little 32gr bullet will do at 350yds to a steel plate.
204 Ruger Savage 12 shooting Hornady 32 V-max factory load.. Rips a really nice hole into the plate. Steel is ripped out of the plate like a flower pedal. Couldn't measure, but maybe 1/8 inch deep, half inch round impact crater. Funny little high spot dead center of the impact crater. Couldn't dare feel how deep it was because it would have sliced your finger.
270 Remington shooting 130gr Core-lokt factory load. After a box of shells he hits the target. Left a big lead mark on the plate. Barely scuffed the plate enough to feel with your finger. Maybe a 1-2/32 inch dent.
308 Win DPMS shooting Fed 150gr soft point, factory load. This guy is laughing at this time. He's really sure he that the big bad 308 is just going to stomp both of us. Well he finally hits the plate. I will admit that the point of impact is just as deep as the 204. But its maybe 3/8 inch around and no steel shrouds ripped out like the 204. Basically a big lead mark like the 270 just deeper.
I know this is just an example but even I couldn't believe the difference between the three. Yes I know the 308 will tear right through the plate at 100yds. But at 350yds I was very impressed with the 204. Needless to say I just converted two more guys over to the 204.

I think velocity is way more important than caliber when trying to punch through steel. Caliber and bullet constrution has something to do with it, but velocity is the biggest danger to steel. Congrats on converting more people to the .204 though :D

Dunno about the 204 but I was surely impressed with what the 17 HMR did to a junk of lead @ 50 yds.

A bullet from a 17 Remington will likely shoot completely through a steel plate at 100 yards where a larger caliber bullet will just leave a mark on the plate.

That being said, I'm never going to take a 17 Remington bear hunting where penetration on liquid based flesh is needed..... Don't let results on a steel plate equate to the killing ability of bullets based on penetration in flesh and bone...

I was wondering what a full metal jacket 204 would do to the plate at 350 yds. Looked around but can't find one available. Anyone know of any company making a FMJ 204 bullet?
