Which gun oil?

Post by aussie204 »

What do you use for corrosion protection in your barrells after you have cleaned them? I've been using Butch's Gun Oil but I'm not that happy with it.
Appreciate any replies. Steve.

I can understand you need something for steel barrels! But I don,t coat my s/s barrel with anything after I have finished cleaning it. Do I need too!

I don't "oil" my barrel...once it has been "seasoned"...Sort of like a good cast iron frying pan.....the object of a good cleaning is to get all the crap out of the tube.....Once I get it as clean as I can what I do is to use a suspended colloidal in it....I use Lockeze....it comes in a spray it is a graphite suspension that some say bonds with the steel. Works well and is easy to use.....Got mine at NAPA......

I run a wet patch of Hoppe's Benchrest in mine before I store them. I use a boresnake with the brush removed to remove the solvent before I shoot again. I do this for stainless as well.

I like a synthentic product, called "Essox" goggle it up and check it out. Works very well as a bore cleaner and protection of all your firearms metals. Bill K

+1 on the Lock-Ease (NAPA # 765-1384). Shake well, soak patch and run it through the barrel. Wait a few minutes and, run one dry patch through. I can't prove it, but I really think it helps with that first shot down the tube as well. For the money a guy ends up with in a good firearm, I can't see leaving it with nothing in the barrel to protect it during storage. Just my dos~centavos!

I've been running a bore mop soaked in INOX down the tube after cleaning the last few times. One dry patch to get the bulk out, then store. I've pulled it out the cabinet and shot without running another dry patch through and had no troubles. No solid proof yet (through lack of history and testing) but the foulers don't seem as far out as they were pre-INOX

BillK - did you mean Eezox?
I'm wondering if it's the same gear as we get in Oz (Inox) under a different label

I have been using Eezox for years. I have been very happy with it. It has a good lube rating as well, in past tests. I use it on the outside of my guns as well. It keeps fingerprint damage down as well. It dries to a film and does not attract dirt as a result. I was originally told that the Canadian military was using it because it would not freeze up. It comes in a spray and a heavier liquid form. I find that the spray can does not spray well after a year or so.

Yes, I mis-spelled it.. I really like this stuff, just seems to work well as a cleaner and maintenance/care item. Bill K
