New to forum and a new cooper 204R

Post by boatammo »

Have been lurking for quite awhile. Just signed up, had trouble with the code as I am color blind had a friend do it. This is my first 204. Have 5 other coopers and they all shoot. Am looking for any others experience in loads that have worked in their coopers. Mine is a MTV. Have 32 vmax and 39 blitzkings on hand also hqve lots of H335 but don't have to be stuck on it. Thanks ahead. rifle will be only used for p=dogs. Live in eastern MT.

Welcome to the forum! Like those Coopers do you? I finally brought one home, an M21 in 20 VT. Can't help you with Cooper-specific data but there are a lot of loads in the "Favorite Loads" sticky post in the reloading section. Good luck and keep us posted.

Have not used that powder. However in my Cooper, I have had excellent results with both of those bullets using RL10X and Federal 205M primers.

In my 204R and the Cooper, I have settled on 25.5 gr of Benchmark and the 39 BK. Gets me about 3750 and pretty consistent groups in the .4 range. Have about 3500 rounds down the tube and, so far, no loss of accuracy. I did try the R10x and it worked pretty well, but not as good as the Benchmark for me. I have never tried H322 or H335.

I've got the same rifle, and mine seems to prefer RL-10X under the 32 SBK or NBT. "Wicked Wanda" as she's named, is pure wickedness in the rat patch, and earned her moniker after just one trip to visit Skippy and his pals:

Typical target, this one shot just after installing a Jard 10oz trigger in the MTV using RL-10X:

All rifle barrels are different in what they prefer, but this one seems to thrive on 10X. Good luck with yours. :D

H335 is good with the 204. I use 27-27.5 grains with the 32 gr Zmax. Haven't settled on a load yet. Leaning towards 27.5.

Thanks guys Please keep the reply's coming. Shot yesterday with 26.5 of 335. Only got low 3600's and high 35's with lots of speed variation. Picked up a can of 10X. Yesterdays loads went .5's to .8's with 26 they are in the .4's. 4 different seating depths. Shot my MTV 223 also as a check of me, its stupid accurate . Will load some today. chrono on the 223 was spot on and very close spreads. I'm scratching my head over the variations with the 204 so will try a diff powder and a slightly diff load of 335. Thanks again.

I could never find a load that suited me using H335 in the 204. I tried because I use 335 in my 223 and have lots on hand. The most accurate loads I found are using RE10x, w/39 sbk's, and Benchmark with the 32 Vmax. I did find a good load with 40gr Vmax and H4895.

I use Benchmark in both my Coopers, shooting 32 Blitzkings in one, and 39 Blitzkings in the other. I did some limited loading with 10X, which did produce some good results in both accuracy and speed. However, with loads already worked out with Benchmark, I decided not to change.

Bought some rem. 7.5's and some 10x. Will try them and see if the that takes care of the variation. Wind has been blowing. Do You guys just drop Your 10x or trickle and weigh each load?

For me in a 204, w/39 SBK, R-P case and R 71/2 primer;

- Reloader 15 gave me the best accuracy with the fastest velocity.
- H4895 gave me excellent accuracy but just a tad slower.
- IMR 8208XBR gave the fastest velocity (by far) and the accuracy was good, but not as good as the RE-15 or H4895.
- Benchmark & RE-10x were both good as well, but since I have more RE-15 and H4895, I passed on them...for now.
- Varget was so-so in my 204's.
- Never tried CFE223.

For all of my 204's, unlike my other cartridges, the best accuracy came with near-max loads.
