You say barrel, but did you have pac-nor install the barrel, and did they true the action?

Looks good, I might be doing the same to an XR-100.

One thing I didn't consider was needing new brass with a new custom barrel. I had some loads from my old barrel and was gonna break in the barrel and they wouldn't even fit in the chamber , and of course brass is hard to find , i normally use winchester and all I could find was hornady brass at twice the cost. Oh well better quality and better than not shooting

Mark, I think maybe if you full length size your brass from your other barrel, it might work. I would be willing to bet that it will. :chin:

This is relevant to my interests...

I'm about to buy a new barrel, and it was my understanding that if you went from a factory chamber to the type of chamber that would come on a custom barrel, even full-length sizing won't get it to fit, because the base will have expanded.

Is that true, false, or in between? If my old 400-ish rounds of brass would work in a new barrel, that may have a serious impact on my barrel/chambering choice...

Twenty Bore...I would think that F/L sizing should fix that.. However, depending on the the reamer for the new barrel, neck turning may be necessary also to make it fit in the chamber. It just all depends on the differences between he two.

My gunsmith told me if my brass had been shot more than once or twice it would probably not work . I did f/l size my brass and they would not fit , not even close . But the new hornady brass went in like butter

majcl5--I have some WW .204 Ruger brass I fired in my old factory Savage 12VLP maybe 5 or 6 times. I put a new super match grade SS 1 in 11 twist Pac-Nor barrel on it and bought a reamer from PT&G with tighter specs than existed in the old chamber. I annealed all that brass, then FL resized the brass so it worked with my headspace tool and it works just fine in my new chamber. I wonder why you can't get your FL sized brass to fit in your chamber if you are full length resizing your brass to headspace specs for your current rifle chamber????

I have done the same thing with another used Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger. Took brass fired in another .204 Ruger, FL resized it to fit the headspace spec in the different rifle and it fits just fine. Same thing with a couple .17 Remingtons I have built over the years. Resized the used brass and it worked fine in the new chambers. Maybe you need to turn the die down into your press just a wee bit more. Have you measured headspace? I have my gunsmith take the stub he cuts off my barrels and run the reamer into that stub so he cuts in as far as the shoulder in the stub. That's one thing I use to check for brass fit. I also have some headspace gauges from commercial companies.

I also used my old brass that had been fired 6 times in my new custom barrel.
I full length sized it with a redding body die bumping the shoulder back to fit the new chamber and it worked fine.
I think setting back the shoulder for proper headspace is the key.
