New CZ 527 Varmint, mini range report

Post by inKYfromSD »

Finally got out to shoot the CZ today. Temp was 50, slight mist, winds calm. Very dreary but the way it's been raining here this was going to be my only shooting window for a while.

Broke it in using a box for 32 gr Hornady factory. Shoot, clean, shoot, etc until the box of 20 was gone. Didn't get the target but it wasn't bad. I could NOT get any copper out of the barrel! I use Shooter's Choice and Montana Extreme for the copper but there was none. This rifle just keeps getting better.

First combination I'm trying is 32 gr SBK, Benchmark, and Remington 7 1/2 primers. The brass is Nosler "seconds" sorted and prepped. Ogive is 1.964". Before the rain started in earnest I managed to shoot 10 slow rounds in 5-shot groups. Cleaned between groups. Again, no copper. I forget to use the set trigger on the 4th shot of the 26.2 group and was sitting on the bench wondering why it hadn't broken yet then I yanked it, but not too awful bad. The shoulders only moved forward .002". Can't wait to get out again!

Nice! I own the same rifle. Give it a few rounds down the pipe and it will really settle down. Mine seems to like the 40gr V-Max or the Sierra 39gr BK with BLC2.

SMBOB, the TC I had liked the 32 gr SBK and 28.9 grs of BL(C)-2. Doesn't look like I ever tried the 39 SBK with anything other than RL10X. I have a few pounds of BL(C)-2 on hand, I'll definitely give that combination a try!

Finally got some pretty decent weather so I spent some time shooting a few test loads in the new CZ and the Cooper 20 VarTarg. The CZ really likes 26.2 grains of Benchmark behind a 32 gr SBK! there's a tad of horizontal stringing but it's still 1/2" edge to edge (the squares are 1/2 x 1/2). Five shot group at 100 yards. Round count is 85. This rifle keeps getting better with age. feeding from the magazine is a little rough though.

So to keep from getting bored while the CZ cooled so it could be cleaned, I brought along my other small caliber rifle, the Cooper 20 VT. I loaded 25 "warmer" loads to test. I settled on 17.8 grains of H4198 after I bought it but never really tried much else. Appears that 18.0 grains behind a 32 gr Nosler might be the load to stick with. Need to address the vertical stringing someday, maybe. Again, 5 shot group at 100 yards.

Yes; at least mine is getting smoother. To help feeding from the db magazine, I lightly stoned the burrs and sharp edges. I also "set" the stiff springs a bit lighter in the new mags by leaving three rounds in them when not in use.
Love this rifle, btw.
