extreme range 600 to 1000 yds

Post by varget204 »

I have a savage m12 w/26"krieger barrel & a sav m10 w/ a 26" criterion barrel, shot out both factory barrels. They both shoot lights out,so i tried them at 200yds shot a few groups under .5".I went to 500 yds shot a 7/8 group,600ds 1 3/8"group,1 1/4 grp, best so far 1 1/16"Backed up to 700yds best grp 1 5/8"height width 1 7/8".800yds under 2.5",900 yds 4 shot at 4",1000 yds ,under 1moa.I have been shooting 40 gr v-max ,28 gr varget 3788 fps avg. the 2" longer barrel got me over 150 fps faster.I think i might be the only guy in the country shooting 40 grainers at these distances.I suggest you try your guns at extreme range you just might be shocked at what the .204 can do.I do not know how to down load pictures, but if one of the moderators,or rick in oregon can contact me,i will send pictures to them so they can post them.i held a ruler up so you could see the size of the groups.I m a former Green Beret, have shot just about every thing up to 105 howitzer.I belong to a long range club that goes out to 1100 yds.I think it may be possible to shoot around 1/2 moa on a calm day.OH buy the way bullet drop at 900 yds is 195.4",at 1000 yds its 295+ " .

Maybe I am just a skeptic, but also a 204R shooter, for a fair number of years now, but I sure would like to see photo's of those groups and the names of some witnesses, a person could contact, that would be witness to them. Just saying. Bill K :)

400 yrds is a chip shot,500 drop on my load is 33,"ft lbs over 400,600 yds 55" drop still has 333 ft lbs.On days its not too windy you can hit pop cans. The 40 gr v-max loads i am shooting avg 3788 fps.At 600 they are still over 1900 fps. Chonograph your loads and figure your drop chart, you will be amazed at what the 204 can do.You can,t shoot long range w 32,s the wind blows them too much.

varget204, if you have not asked if RIO would post them, for you. You might do as I do. I have trouble posting them on the site/thread, but I can make my album and get my photo's posted/entered there, with no problem. You might open a album and do the same. Go to the top header, clic community then albums and follow directions. Bill K

My bad varget204, that would be over on the Saubier.com site. But it will work and we can see your photos.

Just playing with factory loads at 400 yrds for now. I have a Sightron 6-24x50 and I agree with a little practice a 400yrd shot can be easily made. The 4 moa line on the scope puts me on target. Using federal 40gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Gonna try 500 next chance I get.

If anyone wants to try it the federal Ballistic calculator worked well for me.

Good shooting, Looks like 1/3 to 1/2 moa.You should be able to. get groups to 500-600 yds, maybe farther.I use JBM-Hornady Ballistics. They are good to about 700yds.At 800-1000 yds i'm geting a lot more drop; at 1000 over 100 inches more.My loads are 3750-3825 fps.I get 32.5 @500,57.5 @ 600,91.3 @ 700,148 A 800,239 @ 900,400 to 408 @ 1000.The charts show 280-300 inches at 1000 yards. If the factory loads shoot that good, you should reload the 40 nosler and the 40 v-max; and see what shoots the best. When you start getting 1/2 -1/3 moa groups at 500 move out to 600-700.You will be amazed at what the 204 can do at distance. The wind call is the most important ,the drops are fairly consistant. It's a little strange shooting 1-5 feet off the target at first. My goal was to shoot 1/2 moa at 1000,i got it sept 30th :D :D ,my new goal 1/3 moa at 1000 yards.I will post photos the 25th or 26th.Good luck and great shooting.A good goal would be 1/4 to 1/3 moa out to 700 -800 yds. varget204: Just curious, but what do you expect to do with a 204 and 40gr bullets at 1,000 yards? Just experimenting to see what you can do? I just don't see any serious or legitimate use for this caliber at that distance.

Don't get me wrong, I have rifles in calibers from .17 to .338 and shoot ALOT, but this is like trying to get a VW to perform like a Ferrari. I just don't see the point. There ARE calibers that are viable at that range, but most would agree that the 204R is not one of them. I've seen your targets, but still don't see the point in it all.

This isn't the first time I've heard of 204 accuracy at 1000 yards although I have yet to try it. To boot, I have seen what a 220 Swift will do at 1000 yards with a 52 grain pill in a 1-14 twist barrel at 1000 yards many times and it's quite impressive so I figure the 204 would be quite similar. Great for shooting paper but for anything else I too am scratching my head.

None the less though, nice shooting because it takes skills to shoot that well that far away.

RIO,Jim White, you ask why i shoot 40 grain bullets at 1000 yards. Its really simple Because I CAN.Just about anyone can shoot small groups[bugholes] at 100 yards. There are thousands of people who can.I could probably count on 1 hand the people who are can shoot 1000 yard groups with the 204 ruger w/40 grain bullets.I know there are a lot of people shooting distance w/.20 cal w/57-60 grain bullets.I have never suggested people shooting game at these ranges.A red fox, or a coyote is in DEEP S--- if he gets with 600 yards of me :D . one of my bucket list is Prairie Dog hunt before i die.A mans got to know his limitations. With practice a lot of guys can shoot 400 to 500 yds.I recently ordered a Stainless Steel Match 6mm Creedmmoor barrel.I'm going to try 70,75,87 grain bullets and see if i can get groups at 1000 yards. Why? to see if it can be done.Anybody can get groups w 103 to 115 grain bullets.I do it because its not a given.I must admit its nice to see the look on guys faces after i wax em with the 204 ruger. :D :D

Factory ammo factory rifle. Love Love Love the Tikka T3
663 yard 3 shot group well under 1/2 Moa
Factory ammo. Wish I had the gumption to make a load for this rifle but when it shoots factory like that why bother.😍😍😍
