Great week in the turkey woods......

Post by Keith in Ga »

Monday morning started slow hearing the first gobble at 8:15 a.m. I moved toward the bird, not knowing he was a "travelling" bird. Every time I got close enough to set up and call, he had moved 100-150 yds further. We played our game of tag for several hours covering at least a mile. Finally at 1:00 p.m., I rolled him with the Browning. He weighed 20 lbs, 10" beard, and 1 1/8" spurs.

This morning, I went to the south end of the farm, hearing birds gobble when I got there. I set up a decoy out in the pasture about 20 yds away. I began calling with a glass call and diaphragm call and had at least two birds fired up. They stayed up in the woods on a high point gobbling. In a few minutes, I heard them coming off the hill and saw the first gobbler go into strut. There were two big gobblers coming my way while a hen with them moved off. The dominant bird strutted all the way in, and I rolled him at about 30 yds. He had a 10 1/2" beard, 18 1/2 lbs, and 3/4" spurs. I killed him at 7:10 a.m. Needless to say, I've had a great turkey season.

Keith: Sounds like a great start to the season. Sort of reminds me of the preacher in the movie "Caddyshack" having the game of his life in the thunder storm. You don't hunt turkeys in the rain, right? ;)

Nice birds there, bud.....way to go! :D

A good season indeed. Congratulations on your turkeys.
Enjoy it while you have it, because things will change.
