Skiff of snow last night and 2-4" expected tonight/tomorrow.

Maybe I should start a post in "Reloading the 204 Ruger" in the WINTER!!!???!!!

It is ok...most of the U.S. needs the water. I believe the end of this summer and continuing into the fall will be the toughtest one yet.

My weekly weather report:

During the week, morning temps of -10F to -15F, wind a slight, 10-15 mph wind.

Friday (yesterday), 40+ degrees, with wind gusts up to 45mph. (Wyoming had it worse - 100 mph!!!).

Today, beautiful morning for 18 minutes...about 20 degrees, sun, gorgeous! ...and the wind is at 15mph with gusts to 25!

Prairie dogs were out today. I went to the range, but to shoot a couple others (only had a 90 minutes!!).

I saw running water in a dry field, drifts of snow, mass of ice, slush, and mud 6" deep.

Man I love shooting!

If anybody wants the data, with notes, email me. acloco@yahoo.com

Couple of things. This is the results from MY Savage 12FV with a $100 scope. I am NOT advising what to use or not to use. I HIGHLY encourage you to work up your own loads. I take NO responsibility if you don't follow safe reloading practices. Unfortunately, my new printer for the chronograph did not print some of the results from 2-6-07.

My rifle likes 35 grain Bergers & 40 VMax. The Bergers liked to be pushed. Only liked 32 grain Sierra's with one powder.

Of note AA2460, well, was weird. The load ladder speeds did not increase as they should. I used a CCI450 primer, so it should have had enough spark to light the powder, but, I do not believe it did. 32 grain Sierra's blew up, just past the chronograph above 4050 fps (due to the twist rate in the Savage) - I only had ONE hole in the target for that five shot group.

This is the format.
1x = one inch group, or 1.2 = one point two inch group (almost 1.25"). I calculated SD, AVG, and VARiance for each group of five shots, then the avg SD, AVG, and VAR for the shot string of that powder/bullet combination is listed.

Its 3 am and the doctors finally confirmed what I've been telling them all along. pneumonia. all I can say is WOW DATA OVERLOAD
I did pick the 35 Bergs as a favorite but my charge weights didnt win.
It looks like your gun will like the 40 v-maxs and 10x the best. Nothing wrong with that at all. Great bullet not expensive and should handle itself at long range good. Those Nebraskan hamsters are small and shy ;)

When you get 3 or more go in one hole your almost home. Now the trick is to get all your neck tensions exactly the same and they'll all go into one hole. The 10x helps the new bore because its slightly sootier than most powders. Almost like a poor mans moly. Absolutely nothing wrong with that either. What works is what works. I've used a lot of moly and WS2 but am not a huge fan of either.

Was this all factory fresh unfired brass you used?
I did notice you mentioned the 32 smk's blew up but your data lists the 32 v-maxs as failing :?
I'll peruse this data some more when I'm awake.
Congratulations on getting it all done. Ready for a new barrel yet

Acloco, First, thank you for sharing all your hard work. I was a little surprised that the 32 vm was failing in your rifle at 4100fps. I shoot the 28.2 h4895 load with that bullet. I have shot quite a few over the chronograph and the average velocity for 50 rounds is 3914.57fps. Quite a bit slower than your results, but a lot of factors could cause that. I’m using rem 7.5 primers, WW cases. My factory tube is a 12 twist also, but a 24” instead of your 26”.
An interesting note is that while your 28.2 load of h4895 was 176fps faster than mine, your load of 27.4gr of h322 was 4064fps and mine is 4047fps average for 20 shots.
Were the failed rounds key holing or do you think they were just disintegrating?

I pasted good information under the wrong bullet for the 32 VMax & BK.

Repaired. It was the BK that did not make it to the target...actually, the first one of the last group of five did, but the last four did not.

Of note, the data, well...is just that...data.

I think, some of the targets show a lot more promise than the data.
