39SBK vs 32Vmax FPS results

Post by bdweis73 »

I finally ran some loads through a chrono, it was interesting according to it 39 SBK's with 24.9 grains of RE 10X, Win Brass and Rem 7 1/2 br primer 10 shot string averaged 3928 Fps out a of 26" barrel savage rifle, and a Remington 26" barrel shooting 32 Vmax with 25.1 grains of RE 10X win brass, and cci 450 primers I got a 10 shot string average of 3807 FPS. Thats a 121 FPS difference with a heavier bullet and and a smaller powder charge. Granted its 2 different rifles and primers, but the 39 grain SBKs at 3900 fps with only 24.9 grains really surpised me I would have guessed around 3700 fps originally, it seemed like hi numbers, but fired a 243 wssm with known numbers and chrono seemed correct. oh ya no pressure signs either Anyone elses thoughts?

That just proves that every rifle is a rule unto itself.

Different internal dim's, different degree of barrel resistence, bearing surfaces, components, etc. When I sent my Cooper M21 MTV in 204 back to the factory to have the barrel trimmed from 26" to my more favored 24", I actually GAINED velocity with both the 32's and the 39's....go figure. :chin:

Ya I'm still scratching my head on it. Also fired case necks on one rifle are coming out at .275 and the other is at .230 wich I understand is normal they both have factory tubes, one is getting replaced after this season think it will be better off as a tent stake as I have never have gotten it to shoot less than an inch. But I have one that I just did personal best 5 shot group with a .4410 at 100 yards.

My .204 = 25.4 grains of R10 and 39SBK's gives a average of 3707 fps.

Haven't shot RE-10x in a while but my records show 3,725 ave. fps with 39 sbk's, using Win Brass and load of 25.3 gr. out of a 22" barrel Savage with 1x12 twist. Group averages came out to just over .6.

From what I've been told, when you shorten a barrel, add flutes or change the structure in any other way it changes the harmonics. Sometimes for the good, sometimes for the bad. If you have a barrel that is already shooting good, be careful about changing it in any way.

Broper: I agree. Years ago, I had an extremely accurate .222 LV benchrest rifle that was easily capable of winning any match. I sold it to a friend and he wanted a heavier scope so he had an inch cut off the barrel. It destroyed the harmonics and the accuracy was gone.

I have a very accurate Rem. VLS and I was thinking about having the barrel fluted. Two different gunsmiths said they wouldn't guarantee that the accuracy wouldn't change after fluting.

Broper, check out the FAQ sections of Shilen's website before you get the barrel fluted. They will not flute a barrel and will void your warrenty if you have a Shilen barrel fluted. They say it creates unrecoverable stresses in the barrel.
