20 cal decapper?

Post by jdeere1 »

Can any of you recommend a decapper for the 204 cases? Redding and Sinclair say they have an adaptor, lee says theirs fit all calibers.

You can turn down the retaining cap in a universal decapping die,or buy the Sinclair adapter or others.

Lee does not recommend the use of their universal decapping die for 17-20 cal.I use a Redding 1 N small
decapping die that works great on 20 cal without the "adapter" (17-20)rod.

I would suggest looking into a Lee collet neck size die. This die sizes the necks of your brass for proper bullet tension, and punches the primers out in one stroke. I use it and I know a lot of other posters here use it.

I use the Universial Lee unit for my 204 and 20 VT. It is tight but it fits the 204. You just have to be a little more careful to make sure that your case is lined up with the rod.

For use in my 223 formed to 20 vt cartridges, it is nicknamed 'the donught detector'. It works fine so long as you keep the donught turned out of the inside of the shoulder/neck junction. Luckily, my K&M carbide cutting pilot fits a fired 20 vt case just about perfectly. I typicaly have to remove the donughts after fireforming, but they are not usually a problem after that.

+ 1 on the Lee collet neck sizing die. It does a great job and comes with a very precise bullet seating die, much more consistant than the RCBS one I used to use.

I stuck my Lee decapping rod in the drill press and turned more of a taper on the main shaft so it doesn't catch on case mouths any more, works great now.
