221 Fireball powder

Post by triggerfingers »

For those that have a 221 fireball, what powder do you use? I have a number of 20 Vartargs that I shot, do you use the same? Found great success with H-4198. Any other recommendations?
Thanks

You nailed it there, TF. My 20VT and both my 221FB's thrive on both RL-7 and 4198, with the nod going to RL-7. A220 works well too, but gives lower velocity than the other two powders, but also gives very good accuracy.

But many guys are burning LilGun in the FB and getting about 3,500 fps with a 40gr bullet. I'm a tad shy using such a fast burner in my rifles, so I stay on the safe side. I've heard about pressure excursions using LG, so I prefer slightly lower velocity, most excellent accuracy and safety.

Some more accuracy may be possible, but this is about as good as I can shoot. The chucks and ground squirrels here do NOT appreciate these rifles!

CFE BLK works great in the 221 Fireball with the 40 gr. bullet.

Right....I remember hearing very good things about CFE BLK in the Fireball with 40 grainers. I've got so much RL-7 on the shelf, I haven't tried it. What kind of velocity are you getting in yours with that degree of accuracy?

Inquiring minds and all that......
