Powder for 204 and 243

Post by Bitman »

I know it's not the best way to do things, but powder is getting scarce.
I need to get 8 lbs while I can, and make it work in both calibers.
I'm just starting to work up loads for the 204, and my new 243 won't be here for a month yet.
I was thinking of H-4895 or H-4350. Anyone have a powder they might recommend for use in both. Oh, I'm planning on using the 39 grain in 204 and 70 grain in 243, Seirra BlitzKings.
Thanks, Dave

H4895 will be your new friend.

Use this in 223 as well as a couple other calibers as well.

My "go to" load with a 1:9 twist 223 (bolt or AR platform) is 25.0 gr of H4895 in front of a 69 gr HPBT from Sierra or Nosler lit by a CCI450 primer. Results are 3000 fps in a 26" barrel and dime sized groups at 100 and 1.5" at 300.

I think you meant H4350, but that is probably too slow anyway for the 204.
Beside the H4895 you could consider H380, H414, Varget, or R15. I would hate to buy 8 lbs. of untried powder. One or the other of your cartridges will suffer a little, but if you have 8 lbs. that neither likes, they will both suffer. Good luck.

I did mean 4350, and corrected it, Thank you.
I thought about H380 and H414, but didn't know if they'd be too slow for the 204.
I'm being told that you can't find Varget anyplace right now.
I used a pound of Benchmark, to break in the barrel of the 204.
I have a pound of H-4895 I will be using, to come up with a load for the 204.

I agree with Alco and 4895. It works nicely in both my 243 and 204. It was my go to powder for my 243 for years. However I use the IMR variety simply because its available locally and the Hodgdon isn't

Another vote for H4895. I currently use it in my loads for both of my 204s and have had very good results in the past in the 243 , especially with light bullets (55 - 70 gr).

the H4895 gets my vote too. I have a great load for my 204 and have been working on one for the 243 and its showing promise. now I am also going to try it in the 308, I just would like to have on pwder for those three calibers and at some point add the 223 to this powder. I like little bug holes and get them with the 204 but as long as I can find a load thats minute of coyote thats good enought for me.

Varget works best in my 243 and my 204, but I really want to find a smaller grain "extreme" powder for the 204. I don't enjoy "tapping" the funnel to fill the 204 cases. Thought I would try some different primers than what I had on hand ......so much for that idea. Oh ya, I shoot 58 gr. V-Max and 32 gr. V-Max
Take a kid to the range, both of you will be glad you did. remy3424
