If you want to build one on the Cheap.I would recommend buying a used Remington or Savage action,Get yourself a DROP IN Criterion,Wilson Match Grade or Shilen Select Match.[ Wilson makes Cooper barrels].These barrels can be bought for around $300 to $400,they are threaded, chambered, crowned, lapped. Get a good trigger It will compete with $3000 to $4000 rifles. My Savage Criterion SS Match Barrel cost $300 +$19 for shipping. You will have to get a Go Gage $28 to $35 to set headspace.I got my barreled actions Ceracoted $120 to $140,w/bolts mags screws etc.I would put them up against high Dollar rifles. The one thing thats the Greatest is when you shoot it out; another $300 -$400 you have a new one. :D

I built my 22-250 from a stevens 200 action. New faster twist barrel, boyds thumbhole stock.its lot more accurate than i dreamed. Sure i sell it might get $500 but im very happy with it.shoots those itty bitty groups way out there.

While I can definitely appreciate a custom build for benchrest shooting and matches, for hunting I'd have a hard time building one. Mainly because the elements and shooter will likely be the limiting factors. I have 3 varmint rifles, savage 22-250, Remington 700 VLS 204 Ruger and a savage Bmag .17WSM.

The 22-250 is 20yrs old with sporter barrel. Longest shot on a woodchuck has been 478yds.

The 204 is new to me this spring. So far I love it! Has a Timney 2# trigger and 5.4-22.5x50 scope. Shoots .5 MOA @200.

The Bmag is alot of fun to shoot. Plastic stock, heavy barrel and shoots .5MOA@100yds. I took a Coyote just shy of 200yds with it a couple weeks ago. Completely surprised me.

These rifles are cheap but great shooters and no doubt, my abilities are sub par with most benchrest guys.
