I'll jump in and apply my .02. All great replies to your post. Don't know what action yours looking at? You did mention 30 cal. So don't over look the ol 30-06. With the powder and bullet selection for hand loading it a great caliber too.

A .260 rem and 7mm-08 is also on my list along with the .300 win mag but I've always wanted a .308 and have plenty of .30 cal bullets on hand along with brass for a .308 that I acquired VERY cheap so in my mind a .308 made sense. Thanks for the input guys

The 308 is a good, reliable round. It was designed and built to be the 30-06 Light, and it fulfills that role well. I look at it kind of like the 'modern-day' 30-30; it's underpowered and ubiquitous, but does the job for most people just fine.

P.S. Even though I've never been able to love the 308, and goodness knows I've tried, I do own 2 at present...
