Remington 700 204 Ruger

Man you guys have some nice rifles. I don't think my pockets are deep enough for a bespoke rifle build but I could make an ordinary Savage or Remington like the ones in my previous post much more accurate with some elbow grease. Bedding here, new stock there, pillars, nice scope etc
The topic I'm more wrestling with right now is 223 or 207. I only shoot steel and paper and reload my own rounds. The range I am a member at has 100-600 yard in 100 yard increments, I have the long ranges covered (wish it was further than 600) with my Bergara 6.5 and the short ranges with CZ 22lr so I'm now looking for the medium range rifle.

Former member Hawkeye Joe shot an '07 Savage LRPV, 35X45 Leupold Competition scope to win our very first Postal Competition. He shot a 5 shot group of .234" center to center for the victory. That's one accurate rifle. Single shot, right bolt, left port I do believe.

We all like and enjoy having numerous rifles. But for now, why not just invest in bullets, primers and brass and use your 6.5 for the 200 - 500 mid range ?

yrunvs, as you're not a varmint shooter, just paper and steel, I wonder why you are even considering a 204 instead of a 223. Better brass availability, better bullet selection, great accuracy and more factory rifles available in the caliber with similar performance.

If it were me, I'd build a nice 223 off a M700 platform, as the aftermarket goodies available for the 700 is legion. Why go for the added velocity the 204 offers if you're not shooting hair? Plus 204 bullets are always more expensive than any offering in .224". To me at least, a 223 for your application makes much more sense, but I'm not the one paying the bill.

My proclivities lean towards much more refined hardware, so a Savage would not be a consideration for me. Do they shoot well? Yes. Are they popular for a economy offering? Yes. Are they crudely made, bulky, overly heavy? Yes. But they do sell, just not to any of the guys I shoot with or know. We all have our preferences, likes and dislikes, and budgets to stay within (most times )

As for liking to have numerous rifles, we're in total agreement. With over 20 varmint rifles in my safe, it's always a mind game choosing what rifle/caliber will accompany me on my ranch visits for thinning out the GS's and rock chucks. About the only time I shoot paper is for load development, or confirming zero prior to a shoot. I shoot beaucoup steel doing pistol drills. For me, it would be a sad day if all I had to shoot was paper or steel. I suppose over 60 years of launching grass rats has spoiled me as to what use I put my rifles to.

Even though this is a 204R forum, IMO, you'd be best served for the intended task with a good shooting 223 with the twist of your choice for what you'll do with it. JMO, YMMV

Thanks, I needed to hear that. I was leaning toward the 223 and only wondering about a 204. My killing days are over and will leave that to you folks. Without steel and paper I guess I would just hang it up.

I hear ya. Without paper or steel, and no noxious rodents, there wouldn't be anything left to shoot, maybe golf balls......?

Well I put my order in for the Remington 700 Stainless Fluted 223 with Dahlonega Armory this morning. A nice surprise was that there was no sales tax on my order. Maybe someday I'll own a 204.
