17 HMR and PD's

Circle the field until the wind is in your face or to your back and they will do pretty good. Did you get the Marlin with the new trigger? Tell us what you think of there trigger.

I don't know if it's the new trigger, but it feels pretty ok. I shot it for the first time the other day. Man what a blast . Easily under an inch at 100yds. I just have to remember it aint the 04, so don't be too demanding.

How has the 17HMR been treating you? I wouldn't trade mine for anything! I have the savage thumbhole stock stainless bull barrel topped with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9. It is a ground hog/coyote killing machine I took a pair of coyotes with it in February and dropped them on the spot, one on top of the other. Taken dozens of hogs this summer YEE HAW. My farthest one was 175 yards!

I bought my youngest son a Savage Laminate17 HMR in 2005. We had to get it bedded, a new trigger and a good scope (Burris 4.5-14x42 BallisticPlex reticle). Went hunting in spring of 2007. Man were we hooked. I picked me up a Savage Thumbhole 17 for myself about a year ago. She shot very well right out of the box.

The 17 blows around in the wind but I enjoy the challenge. The furtherest I hit one was 290 yards, but in all honestly, thats stretching it.

I went out a couple of weeks ago to resight my 17 in for squirrels(30 yds.). Just for kicks I then walked my target out to 85 yds. and took some shots. Same point of impact! No drop at all. You can't do that with a 22lr.

Better than.................well you know. Since I got a set of green mountain barrels 1-17HMr 1-22mag, my 77/22 hasn't been the same!
My son and I super glue fishline to 50cal paintballs and hang them from a board at 100 yards for a challange, what a sight to see in your scope. Let a friend use my 17 HMR to control the local goose population on a golfcorse he works at................now he wants to buy one. I had to pry mine out of his hands to get it back! He was having way to much fun.

I own two HMR's a Ruger K77/17VMBBZ w/ Nikon Buckmaster 6x18x40 SF BDC and a MARLIN 917VS w/ Mueller 4.5x14x44 APV both of these ALWAYS go with me when I go PD hunting. I take two bricks of Hornady 17grVMAX both guns love them..........They are great to shoot

The PD Battery!

Well, my favorites are the .260 Rem and yes, the .17HMR. That and my recently acquired .204 Ruger #1 constitute the battery. Reason for large variation in calibers is the variety of shooting conditions you run into. .17HMR is more than adequate to say 125 yards. Then the .204 and the .260 come next. I prefer to use smallest applicable caliber.

Here are M70 .260 Rem and Cooper 57 in .17 HMR. Cooper is a very fine rifle.

My Anshutz 1517D HB G "Custom". Notice the factory "large" bolt knob. Came from Germany with a 14" threaded barrel. By the time I "rescued" it the barrel had already been removed due to it's short length. Picked it up minus the barrel for $200 (aka STOLE it) and found a take-off HM2 Anschutz barrel for another $100. Had the chamber reamed to .17hmr with a PTG reamer and fitted by Evelio MacDonald (silhouette gunsmith). I actually don't shoot this much myself but I take a friend of mine that is just learning about shooting along with me to the pdog fields and he uses it. I don't think he understands how lucky he is. Not a lot of people get to learn how to shoot with a $1000+ rimfire.

You ain't kiddin Doc! In South Dakota, the Dogs were out in force but so was the 20knot winds. Guys that didn't have Varmintmaster benches and heavy varmint rigs had them, their bullets and their tables litterally blown away. The .260 with the 100 gr SVHP blew right through those conditions while the .223 people were in confusion and uneffective.

The next day the sun came out and the things totally changed.

Well, my favorites are the .260 Rem and yes, the .17HMR. That and my recently acquired .204 Ruger #1 constitute the battery.

Your caliber line up is the same as mine except, I have a 6mm Remington vice the 260 Remington. It's pretty effective.
