Rabbit Hunting Aussie Style - With Exploding Bunny Video

Post by mickgibbo »

This is my first post here, hope its in the right section but I thought it would be appreciated here. I run a Remington VSSF II with a Leupold VX-L 6.6-20x56 Varmint Extreme.

After picking up Swado from Goulburn we headed out to a mates farm at Taralga to do some bunny sniping and hopefully whistle a fox or 2. The owner said that he had seen quite a few bunnies down the back so that’s where we headed and set up our sniping position off the dam wall and watched over warrens at 100m to 350m away and what an afternoon we had.

There were many rabbits taken with the .204 Ruger and the 22.250 and they were both well and truely on song, the rifles were being passed around shoot for shoot and a heap of fun was had. The afternoon result was approximately 20 rabbits and a fox. The day started off with head shots but soon started into high explosive shots for the Video.

The end of the day saw us looking around for some long shots and a fox was spotted at a good distance, it was estimated at 600m and a personal best 1 shot kill was registered for me which resulted in a GPS measured 587m kill. The varmint reticle was sensational on the weekend and perfectly matched the .204 Ruger flat trajectory.

The bunnie kills were very explosive and the boys enjoyed using the .204 as they were able to watch the explosive hits through the scope.

Here is a Video from the weekend, watch in HD to get the full effect of the hits.

Those Aussie rabbits sure are messy!
Great post. What bullet made the long fox kill? I've had some success to 600 yards with 39 Sierra bk's and 500 yards with 40 Nosler's.

Welcome to the forum! The red splatter scope is the one I want for my new Cooper rifle! Don't think I can afford it these days however. I love the pics and the story, looks like you have a good bunch of mates! Gary

It was the 39gr SBK that were used on the long shot.

Sweet work with the vid, mate. And the shooting too of course.

Was the long shot fox very damaged by the SBK after that distance? I imagine after losing a lot of velocity over that distance shot placement would have been pretty important to effect the kill?

Was the exploding bunny shot with the 204 or 22.250?

How good is the .204 for this sort of work eh? and is your mate thinking of getting a 204 so he can watch his hits through the scope!

Good on ya Mick, keep it coming.

Everything in the video was with the .204 Ruger, the long shot was an entry hole and that was it, as I would have expected.
