2024 Small Caliber Five Shot Challenge TARGETS

Post by skipper »

Here are the targets. Take a close look, measure and be ready to cast your vote on the smallest group. That will decide the winner.

Personally I imported the targets into Microsoft Power Point. I resized them so that all three were exactly the same using transparency control to overlay each on the otters to achieve the size equivalency. Then I used a line to determine group size. Tip - You can make the ends of a line have round or arrow shapes. I chose round so I could place them over the shot holes. The winner is clear to me BUT, I need others to confirm my opinion and reach a consensus.

When You have come to your conclusion, reply to this post by stating the winner. The consensus of votes will decide.

Well I am doing the measuring with my set of Cabela's digital tool. Trying to measure center to center on the widest bullet holes.

Doing this I have SecretCode at .412, WesF at .493 and Bill K at .346. When I measured mine on the shot target I showed .319.
I would like to see someone measure these targets with a On Target Ap and see how they compare or what it shows as to size.

That target of Secret Code is super good, and if measured better than I can, he just may edge me out. Which is fine and dandy. Anyone willing ? :D

Holy Cow Bill nice grouping! I think you might even be underestimating your shooting. When I measured mine outside to outside then subtracting .204 I get closer to you on paper as compared to a screen.

I'd be pretty sure yours is a bit smaller if you did greatest outside measurement then subtracted .204.

The problem with online group measurement I've found (at least on my phone) is the need to find a 1" reference point. It needs a pretty precise touch. It is probably better on computer with a mouse, not sure if any programs would run that are from phone apps. Someone out there is surely smarter than me with electronics.

Using a calibration with a digital Calibrator is not really the best way, except if all do it the same way. I try for center to center on the widest bullet holes. You are measuring outside to outside.
That is why I think a app needs to be done, like On Target or something like it.
So maybe WesF does it that way and see what he comes up with. Or Skipper, as he did in previous shoots, measure the targets and give us the results.
Or the three of us, if that is all that puts up a target, agree on a measurment amongst ourselves.
What do you think ? :)

What I did was print each of the targets and then measured the grouping. What did you get in measuring the three ? And did you print targets or measure on the PC screen ? What were your measurements for each ?
I am waiting also to see what WesF comes up with.

Gentlemen, I'm in the north woods of Wisconsin until 8 July & don't have access to my desk top computer that has the On Target application. If memory serves me correctly, my grouping measured out at 0.339, but I'm getting older so I can't depend on my memory. With that measurement and looking at the photographs on this page, I'm thinking I've come in with a solid 3rd place. In looking at the photographs of groupings submitted by SecretCode and Bill K, my non-calibrated eyes are telling me the groups are too close to call. I will defer to the measurements taken by our two other competitors and Skipper. I'm very impressed with the groupings that have been submitted! I can see that I have a ways to go to catch up with Bill & SecretCode, great shooting gentlemen!
Shoot straight & often.

Secret Code. I did a outside measurement outside to outside and subed .204 as you mentioned.
Doing it that way I came up with me. .267, you (Secret Code) .332 and WesF .448, so how does that compare to what you and Wes, what have you come up with as a score on each ? :)

And by the way, as I said. I did shoot the little Rat and scored him the same morning. Here is what I did with the Rat, for fun. As I said he is awful small at the 100 yrd mark, with my 10X scope.

Did any of you give him a go, for the heck of it ? Bill K :D

Wes. I am real eager to see what you show with the On Target scores. I think that is a more accurate system. I used to have it on my PC, but a year or so ago lost it with some other stuff. Guess I should download it again, but I really don't use it that much.
I think when you score the three of us, you will find we all have made good groups and are so close to each other.
I will go with what you and Secret Code come up with as to final score. I think we all did very well for the age's we seem to be at, I know I am not as steady as I was a year or so ago, but I still have fun.

This year instead of my usual 204 R rifle I shot this with my Savage 20 Tac. ( posted a photo of it on the bench earlier) 28grn of 2520 under the 32 LF Nosler tipped. This load is pretty deadly for me on squeeks and Rock Chucks out to 4-500 yrds which is about as far as I shoot them. Most are more within or under 200-300 yrd. Bill K :D

It has been another fun shoot, just wish more would enter, and I again Thank Skipper for his effort, time and work to do this. Bill K :D

Bill K

I'm trying to leave a competition that's easy to facilitate. This is my last year to administrate this event, remember? I'm not planning to use On Target unless there's a dispute. I really don't think it is necessary. I'm waiting to hear what WesF and SecretCode say. The winner is obvious, to me. I just want confirmation. Next year no one will remember group sizes, just the winner.

Thanks again, first off Skipper. I feel that she scoring is showing a winner, so far. But I want to be fully sure and a accurate score done.
That is all I am saying, other than all the shoots you have put on have been fun and very interesting. I still wish more would jump on board and shoot in them.
I am waiting to see what Wes comes up with also and then the final word. Thanks again, it was fun. I still loved the little Rat. Bill K :D

If you are measuring outside to outside and subtracting the bullet diameter you'll have to subtract based on the round shot. Not everyone was shooting a .204.

I used Microsoft Power Point and resized all the targets so the rings and crosshairs were the exact same size. Then I measured using a line with ends the same diameter as possible to the bullet holes. Center to center Bill K's measured a .31. SecretCode was so close with a .35. To me that was good enough to determine the winner. Your mileage may vary.

Five shots touching is some fine shooting, indeed. Too bad we can't call it a tie.

If everyone is satisfied I think we can call it with Bill K the winner. I'll send you instructions for adding your signature banner. Congratulations to ALL who participated.
